Mixed Media, Second Edition, introduces readers to the tools necessary for making moral and ethical decisions regarding the use of mass media. The chapters in this text offer insights on:

  • Similarities and differences among the ethical dilemmas faced by the mass media
  • Common ground on which to evaluate media behavior
  • Media obligations
  • Professional ethics
  • Ethical theory and its application to the modern media
  • Considerations of truth and harm

New to the second edition is a focus on the three mass media industries most pervasive in today's society: the news media (journalism), advertising, and public relations, with individual chapters giving equal coverage to each. It includes an increased emphasis on "new media" and how ethics affect such concepts as social media, word-of-mouth marketing, and citizen journalism. Readers will come away with a greater appreciation for moral philosophy and theory as a foundation for decision making, and will develop a personal "yardstick" by which to measure their decisions.

Editorial Reviews

Review

There is a great deal of excellent information including an appendix containing eight ethical codes or statements of principles from various groups of journalists, public relations, and advertising professionals. There are the wonderful and readable case studies covering episodes of questionable ethics.
Communication Research Trends

Bivins has done a remarkably thorough job of incorporating his favorite philosophers and their theories, as well as carefully honed discussions of matters that are often passed over in other books....it is easy to see why Mixed Media is likely to become a book to dip into whenever one needs to consider a possibly ethical dilemma. It may not give 'the' answer-but it certainly will help the professional or student reader-to-come to an answer that can be lived with.
Media Ethics

A strength of the book is also its skillful blending of ethical theories with traditional theories of the press and FirstAmendment considerations. The book's treatment of ethical theory is its great strength.

More About the Author

TOM BIVINS is a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. He has worked in broadcasting, advertising, public relations, and as a graphic designer and editorial cartoonist. He is slightly overeducated, but doesn't let that get in the way of having fun with words and pictures.

He is the author of books on media ethics, public relations writing, publication design, advertising, and newsletter publication. He also has published a couple of children's books with his brother and a small book of poetry (all on his own).

He primarily teaches ethics to journalism students. Mark Twain is his moral inspiration. His critique of all things powerful made him the perfect literary defender of all things not so powerful, yet deserving.
