5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, inspiring, very creative
I am so glad I got this book! The pictures and ideas are wonderful. The book is full of inspiration. Only a couple of grammatical errors in the text, but the photography makes up for everything. Anyone can now make creative dollhouses for any theme, with any materials, and at little cost. I will buy another copy of this book for my sister - I know she'll love it. Can't...

3.0 out of 5 stars Expected more
I expected a less amateur approach to the subject. I was disappointed that alot of the examples were poorly executed or sloppily put together.

Anyone can now make creative dollhouses for any theme, with any materials, and at little cost. I will buy another copy of this book for my sister - I know she'll love it. Can't wait to get started. I bought a little journal and I'm jotting down ideas that come into my head as I'm looking through this book. A big THANK YOU to Tally and Julie! Would love to see a sequel book, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars thank you for writing this book, April 22, 2010
This review is from: Mixed-Media Dollhouses: Techniques and Ideas for Doll-size Assemblages (Paperback)
I have been creating shrines and other assemblage for over 10 years now and when I think back to my childhood, I remember that it all started there. We couldn't afford the Barbie Townhouse, so I made my own. I was always creating little living spaces for my dolls or imaginary people and when I think back to it, it makes me happy.

That happy feeling got me started on a new dollhouse. An altered dollhouse. I started with a box from a warehouse store, painted it and gave it a cool brick-looking roof. And then I got scared about wasting my time on something so silly.

Oh, but wait, it makes me happy, doesn't it?

My friend showed me this book yesterday. I have only looked at the photos (haven't read a stitch of text) and immediately went to the store to pick up a copy of my own. I went home and dragged out my dollhouse and am looking at it with a fresh eye and "permission" to play.

And it makes me happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stupendous!, April 29, 2010

This book could encourage anyone, regardless of artistic skills, to become engaged in the art of assemblages. The idea for the book was born when the authors, Tally Oliveau and Julie Brill Molina, challenged a group of artist friends to create specific rooms for a theme house. When the participants finished, the rooms were assembled into a house. Apparently, they had so much fun, that they created a collection of houses - a tree house, a castle, a circus house, and 4 others. Each room is basically a shadow box which is intricately decorated with miniatures, paper dolls, mixed media, and much, much more. The book could be useful for someone interested in a form of self-expression or easily adapted for an elementary through high school project.

This book is 1) gorgeous to look at and 2) full of very creative ideas. It certainly got my creative mojo going! Too bad I have to work, otherwise I would there, nose to book and trying to make as many great things as possible. I really enjoyed just looking through this book as well, often commenting to myself as to the creativeness within. If you are a "house" fanatic as I am, you will enjoy this book.

I bought this book for inspiration, and it did not disappoint. I do my own thing, but looking at the work in this book helped me get started on my own assemblages. It combines altered art, assemblage making, and doll house work in a very pleasing way, all things I enjoy.

It's one of those books that I will enjoy browsing through when relaxing. I'm glad I bought it.

Love this book. It is unusual in its approach to making dollhouses but not sweet little things we usually see in books on this subject.
I have begun projects inspired by this book and intend to continue with these art forms. Must have for quirky artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Visual Poetry", August 13, 2010
This review is from: Mixed-Media Dollhouses: Techniques and Ideas for Doll-size Assemblages (Paperback)
I ordered this book a few weeks ago without ever seeing any part of the inside. As a mixed media artist, I have many artsy books and thought I had seen in all, but this book is over the top. Just beautiful from cover to cover!

I've been wanting to do some assemblage for a while, even have a wooden cabinet I got a the Salvation Army for $4 that I can building something in. This book is already helpful in getting me started thinking about it. I had the cabinet, knew I wanted to do something interesting, but what? Totally worth the price, in my opinion, for the entertainment of looking through the book.
