Combining the ancient traditions of Native & African storytelling, Mwalim brings forth cultural truths for a modern society. -- The Scribe

About the Author

Mwalim is a multifaceted Black Wampanoag performance artist, writer and arts educator. Regionally and nationally, he has distinguished himself as a musician, composer, singer, actor, writer, director and filmmaker. His stages have included coffeehouses, theaters, schools, jails, colleges, festivals, street corners, museums, libraries and churches.

He grew up immersed in the storytelling traditions of the West Indies and West Africa as well as the medicine story tradition of the northeastern Native nations. From these influences he began crafting and telling original tales to audiences throughout the East Coast. His music also reflects a profound and eclectic mix of influences including jazz, funk, classical, Native American, West Indian and Afro-Latin. Mwalim has been known to perform alone and with "Soul Ensemble", his 3 piece jazzy-soul band.

Mwalim formally studied theater arts and production at New African Company in Boston. He has performed as an actor, director and musical director of professional and community theater productions throughout New England. He is the co-founder and Artistic & Executive Director of Oversoul Theater Collective, Inc., a professional Black and Native American arts and education organization, that provides cultural programs and professional arts training to community people on Cape Cod and in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Through this organization, Mwalim shares his abilities and experiences as a professional actor, director, writer and teacher with the youth of his community.

His published works include two books, "A Mixed Medicine Bag" and "A Party at the Cross-Roads" (Talking Drum Press) and four plays, "Out, by the Roots!", "The Barber of Seville Street", "Voices In The Wind" and "Musings: Skits, Skats and Sketches". His first single "Thief in the Night" will be released in March of 2000 preceding his first solo album "Jazz, Funk'n Folklore", due for release in July (Midnight Groove / OTC Records).
