I have to start by saying I took a class with this author and have been waiting for her book for 2 years. I have not made much jewelry in those two years, so buying this book has brought back to me the techniques I learned in her class and other classes I have taken. This book could be purchased by beginners to metal work, although I would recommend a class of metal work to go along with reading the book. For experienced metal and jewel smiths, there are techniques in here the author developed and they can be incorporated in to many other jewelry styles and looks. I am always disappointed with new jewelry book pages of "tools." However, Kim has some unusual tools in here and many from objects you would not normally think of. The 2 year wait was worth it and I am looking forward to cleaning out the studio and dusting the surfaces and making time to do a few new projects. I DID save a tree stump when the oak tree had to come down a month ago. I learned that in Kim's class and she was the first to show it to me. This is not a book to just "look" at in one sitting or a book to get thru in only a hour and then putting back on the shelf. The techniques in here require a little studying and you will come back to the pages again and again for techniques. It is a book to grow with and is a serious body of work.

I just have to say that this new book by Kim St. Jean is AWESOME!!! Did I say AWESOME? OMG--it is SO DETAILED! I have never enjoyed a tool section until now...and so many photos. I love the photos! If I am ever unsure of the written instructions for a project, I look for an accompanying photo. Of course, there isn't always one around in most books. However, in Kim's book, there are as many photos as there are detailed instructions.

I, too, have been fortunate enough to take a couple of classes with Kim. She is an amazing teacher and generous to a fault. There is nothing she won't share with you in one of her classes, so if you are ever given the opportunity to take a Kim St. Jean class, do not hesitate. You will learn so much. Kim's generosity is reflected throughout her new book -- she leaves no details out from the fantastic tool section throughout each of the beautiful projects--and there are a lot of projects. I worry now that I won't live long enough to try them all! I am now scrambling around for all those little things I need to make some of the projects -- things I never thought of using in jewelry before like deer antlers for starters (yes, really)! And beach stones and fossils like ammonite, just to name a couple.

Ever since I purchased this book, I have carried it with me everywhere. It goes to lunch with me, it goes to the movies with me, it is with me as I watch tv at night and of course, it goes to my studio with me. So far, the only place it has not gone is to bed with me. This is not one of those books you will want to "ride the fence on" -- do I want it or not? It is a definite keeper. It is a beautiful work of art, all by itself...I will treasure mine for years to come. Thank you Kim, for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us. I, for one, am eternally grateful!

I also took a workshop with Kim St Jean, author of Mixed Metal Mania om 2009 at William Holland. I must say that she is a teacher with the most clear explanations and directions of all the instructors I've ever had. Former teacher - and it shows! This book follows the same teaching strategies giving clear, concise, and down to earth instructions. She provides a wealth of excellent step by step directions illustrated with clear and close up photos. I am also impressed to see that her instructions can easily be transferred to a different kind of project. Jewelry makers can work to perfect a chosen skill while making a wide variety of jewelry pieces, all of which will be their own original designs rather than copies of St Jean's examples.

This book should be on the bench of all but the most expert of metal jewelry makers - and some of the experts might learn a bit as well! Absolutely excellent! Kay Zoretic

Although I have a lot of books on soldering, riveting, etc., this one stands out because it is really clear to a novice and also because it tells how to use a small butane torch for things I want to do, rather than a big tank torch which I don't have. But I think the designs and ideas would be good for beginners and more experienced metal workers as well.

I have many jewelry making books and this is one of my favorites. The projects are beautiful and are accompanied by easy to follow step-by-step instructions. Many metalworking techniques are explained in this book including foldforming, forging, riveting, reticulation, and soldering.

The only thing I don't like about this book is that it doesn't have an index.

This book would be a great addition to any jewelry maker's book collection. Highly recommended.

"Mixed Metal Mania" is a great guide for learning how to make incredible metal jewelry. We have a small shop and have started to diversify our craft line by adding handmade jewelery, so I was thrilled to get a review copy of this book from the publisher.

There is a lot of information packed into this deceptively thin book! The first section covers the tools and techniques you will need for almost any type of serious jewelry making and the second part has 27 projects that include everything from working with rivets to apply a patina.

The instructions are clearly presented and include many helpful pictures to guide you through the steps. Most of the projects are very exotic looking, but are achievable by with normal (and improvised) tools and materials. However a few of the projects require specialized equipment (like a "Rolling Mill", used to flatten wire) that we have not yet invested in.

This is a great addition to my crafting and jewelry making library and likely to be one of my most referenced books!

Highly Recommended!
