DJ Baby Anne brings the nu breaks style to Las Vegas for Mixed Live, part of the Moonshine label’s ongoing series of recorded live sets. Like past entries in the series from Carl Cox and AK1200, Baby Anne’s dirty, intensely danceable sound works well in this format, effectively conveying the kinetic energy of her act. A combination of breakbeats, drum & bass, and old-school techno, nu breaks has an organic, retro feel that Baby Anne gets just right. Tracks like Sharaz’s "Brain Damage" and Merlyn’s "Solar Flares" share minimal textures with snap-and-crackle beats, while Baby Anne’s self-produced "Down To Zero" flirts with Fischerspooner-like electro. She’s also willing to get evil for darker material like "Nightmare 2002," which gives her set some variety, and the crowd a chance to gather itself for the next big break. As a further bonus, the CD comes with a 5.1 Surround Sound DVD, to give you an even stronger "you-are-there" feel. --Matthew Cooke

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great Baby Anne mix, December 12, 2003
This review is from: Mixed Live Club Ra, Las Vegas (Includes Bonus DVD in 5.1 Surround Sound) (Audio CD)
Baby Anne truly is the queen of (american) breaks and this disc proves it. After some admittedly uneven studio mixes she shows us where she shines the most, live. I've downloaded several of her live sets off the internet and all, like this one are truly great. She definetely has the Icey influence but takes it on her own trip, throwing in some more housey and trance elements than he tends to do but bringing us right back to the break in the end. Also the 5.1 stereo mix adds a lot making this a great value (especially considering they're now selling these kind of dvd's for $20+ bucks apiece)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Sound of Underground, September 24, 2003
This review is from: Mixed Live Club Ra, Las Vegas (Includes Bonus DVD in 5.1 Surround Sound) (Audio CD)
Right from the very first track, I was HOOKED.

Make sure when you start this CD off, your speakers are at full blast and your subwoofer is primed and ready.

I'm not even THAT big of a fan of breaks, I'm more into house and techno... but man... this rocks and this rocks HARD.

Like the other reviewers said, this will make your subwoofer earn its stars.

Baby Anne, I had never heard of you before this, but now you have a new fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Up and running and then it Breaks, December 4, 2003

This review is from: Mixed Live Club Ra, Las Vegas (Includes Bonus DVD in 5.1 Surround Sound) (Audio CD)
It starts off with a track that hooks you, and yes, louder does make it better. One can imagine being in the club with the music booming, which is a nice touch, with it being recorded and mixed live. By the third track, Blue Light Fever's "DJ" opens up and makes this cd happen. Unfortunately, after that, none of the other tracks keep the intensity of "DJ", and by the end of the cd, if you're not much of a breaks listener, you'll be left wondering what happened to the good stuff that makes you want to shake your groove thang. And that's what a live dj is supposed to do, get you hyped up and make you shake your groove thang.
