Book Description

There's no place like home.

For Princess Miya Black 'home' is Clover Island, a tiny dot of a place not even named on most maps. Founded fifteen years ago by her parents, ex-pirate Tomas "Boots" Black and ex-princess Lilith "Lily" Brightburn, it's a place for second chances and new beginnings. It's there that Miya was born, there she grew up, and there she now lives, spending her days riding with her best friend, practising swordsmanship with her fake uncle, sailing with her father, and avoiding book lessons with her mother. To Miya it's the best place in the entire world, and she knows how lucky she is to have it.

So when her home is threatened Miya doesn't just sit around sulking. She's the princess of Clover Island, with the blood of pirate legends running through her veins, and she'll do whatever it takes to protect her kingdom.

"Adventure Dawns" is the first book in the Miya Black, Pirate Princess series.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The characters are strong, and the fight scenes are fast-paced and exciting."

"I think that girls could very easily identify with Miya, as a headstrong girl who wants to prove what she's capable of. A strong female character like that is a great thing."

"Enchanting, exciting, excellent."

4.0 out of 5 stars Pirate adventures await! June 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a book about Miya Black, a princess pirate who lives on Clover Island with her parents. It focuses on adventures that Miya has while trying to find help to save her island from a pirate invasion. The book was written for young adults, but if you are a child at heart you will enjoy the book also. I found the book to read at a pretty good pace and that it had enough action to keep my attention. While some of the scenes aren't realistic for a fourteen year old, I liked that here was a strong role model for girls.

I would recommend the book to anyone who wants a little action in their lives while setting on a beach or near a pool. I can honestly say that I will be buying the second book to continue with Miya in her adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall thrilling May 22, 2011
By Onion
Format:Paperback
The first four chapters in this novel open much more slowly than the plot really requires, and I think this is in part due to the focus on realistic dialogue over effective dialogue. We see Miya, a thirteen year old girl, acting and speaking in a manner than does well to remind us that she is in fact thirteen, but can quickly become tedious. But from chapter 5 on the plot picks up and becomes much more engaging, as she leaves her home island in search of her family and adventure and runs into many mishaps on the way. The characters are strong, and the fight scenes are fast-paced and exciting.

I think that if I had this book at the age of the principal character, it would have been one I devoured. The reading level is appropriate for preteens and I think that girls could very easily identify with Miya, as a headstrong girl who wants to prove what she's capable of. A strong female character like that is a great thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars YA Pirate Princess to the Rescue August 15, 2011
By Arador
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a good Young Adult fantasy. It had a strong female character, who kids could look up to. Miya is an active adventerous pirate princess who is very loyal to her family and home. Some parts were a bit dry, but overall an enjoyable read. The pirate history was a good touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars enchanting, exciting, excellent November 11, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A wonderful first novel (and it is a novel at 376 pages) which has been able to enthrall everyone that I lent it to or given as a gift. While it is a wonderful adventure story, Ben White has developed an exceptional character in the 14 year-old Pirate/Princess.
Personally I enjoyed it and devoured tale over a wet weekend. Two 9-year old girls loved it and the manager of a local university book store was very impressed.
Well done and I look forward to the next Miya Black story which can be previewed at [...]

Best wishes,

Tony Harley

4.0 out of 5 stars Nicely written adventure story November 13, 2011
Format:Paperback
At first I found the Miya Character a little tedious but then how many 14 year old tomboys aren't. This actually ended up being not a bad story. Princess Miya Black is off on an adventure when her previously unknown half brother Sola arrives telling a tale of his island being attacked. Miya and her brother decide to go and find her pirate grandparents for aide when the find out the priate that attacked her brothers people are going from island to island enslaving everyone as the go. The actions scenes are very well written and after a while the book starts to flow. I see that there is a part 2 and 3 or this series and would love to read them. Good Job and not a bad way to spend an afternoon in the sun.

More About the Author

Oh, hello! I'm Ben, Benjamin Joseph Kuniyoshi White if you're not into the whole brevity thing, BJK White if you're somewhere in the middle. I'm sometimes an author person. Most of my books would fall under the umbrella of 'Girls Kicking Arse', and probably if you had to choose a section of the library to put them in, Young Adult would be the safest bet.

To get specific, I'm the leastselling author of the Miya Black, Pirate Princess series, as well as the superhero diary of Charlotte Powers, the zombie-infested unlife of Imogen Shroud, the slightly depressing world of Resonance, and a whimsical little book called The Boy & Little Witch.

I live in Nelson, New Zealand with my super-wife and two busy young daughters, and sometimes I get time to write a bit.
