Book Description

December 30, 2000
Hollywood producer Davis Mizlansky has it all - Italian shoes, a house in the hills, even an unctuous assistant who picks the scallions out of his Szechuan noodles. But he'll lose it all to the IRS - unless he can pull off one more deal.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Originally entitled "Schmucks," this comedy, set in 1984, takes a look at Hollywood clich?s: out-of-work actors reduced to producing Bible stories (often reminiscent of porn), nervous breakdowns, money laundering, tax shelters, fraud, dodging the IRS, anti-Semitism, back-biting, sumptuous meals, and dentists who write blockbusters. Topical and intelligent, it is filled with memorable one-liners and sharp and fast-paced dialog. However, it is a little difficult to distinguish among the various voices, and transitional elements usually conveyed by gesture or setting are lacking. Recorded live, there is loud audience reaction, which at times seems canned. The ten-member cast includes Nathan Lane, Rob Morrow, Paul Sand, and Julie Kavner. Recommended, but keep in mind that, unlike fiction or most nonfiction, tapes of plays in general, and this play in particular, require close attention.ARochelle Ratner, formerly with "Soho Weekly News," New York

Review

Jon Robin Baitz has a wicket eye for detail and a natural talent for storytelling to brilliantly craft an hilarious portrait of modern-day Hollywood and its denizens. Directed by Ron West and produced by Susan Albert Loewenberg, Jon Robin Baitz' "Mizlansky/Zilinsky" is an amazing multicast, audio theatre performance. -- Midwest Book Review

Part of the series heard locally on KCRW, this production of L.A. Theatre Works, now in its 25th year, boasts the fevered hysterics of Nathan Lane as a producer reduced to avoiding the IRS and his ex-wife while dealing with a nefarious partner on a deal to produce substandard Bible stories for kids. A terrific cast, well directed by Ron West. -- Entertainment Today

5.0 out of 5 stars Like being on Broadway!, May 20, 2001

This review is from: Mizlansky / Zilinsky -- starring Starring Nathan Lane and Paul Sand (Audio Theatre Series) (Audio Cassette)
Absolutely hilarious play, with great acting by a terrific cast. The plot is funny, and the dialogue is funnier. What made this very special for me was the format -- a "live" audio theater performance. It was like being on Broadway. A great experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb "theatre of the mind" listening experience!, June 5, 2000
This review is from: Mizlansky / Zilinsky -- starring Starring Nathan Lane and Paul Sand (Audio Theatre Series) (Audio Cassette)
The superb cast bringing Jon Baitz' dark comedy of sleazy Hollywood producer Davis Mizlansky and his problems with ex-spouses, colleagues, customers, and the IRS to life includes Nathan Lane, Paul Sand, Julie Kavner, Samantha, Harry Shearer, Richard Masur; Rob Morrow, Grant Shaud, Kurtwood Smith, and Robert Walden. Ably directed by Ron West, this superbly produced, 106 minute, two cassette unabridged comedy was recorded before a live audience and offers a terrific listening experience enhanced with a full course of sound effects. Mizlansky/Zilinsky will prove a popular and entertaining addition to any personal, drama school, or community library audiobook/audioplay collection.
