Book Description

Architectural History Foundation Book May 5, 1987
This is the first complete biography of the inimitable society architect Addison Mizner, whose Spanish Revival buildings created a new style of resort architecture for Palm Beach and south Florida during the boom years of the 1920s. By 1925, Mizner ranked as one of the country's most prominent architects, as important in his own time as Richard Morris Hunt and Stanford White had been in theirs.

The book's 150 illustrations include plans and historical photographs—many published for the first time—showing Mizner's handling of space, the relation of his houses to the landscape, and the many picturesque buildings that combined the comfort and convenience expected by his clients.

Mizner's Florida is fifth in the Architectural History Foundation American Monograph Series, edited by David De Long.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Mizner's Florida combines colorful biography with a thorough reevaluation of the architect's contribution to regional design."
Julie V. Iovine, Architectural Record

"If anything, Mizner's work is more relevant today than it was twenty years ago. Then, it was his work that seemed stale. Now Modern architecture is the thing that is stale and Mizner has renewed freshness."
Paul Goldberger, The New York Times

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mizner Mansion looses it's Battle, July 13, 2009

This review is from: Mizner's Florida: American Resort Architecture (Architectural History Foundation Book) (Paperback)
I purchased this book to give me insight into an architect I knew little about. I have learned Addison Mizner "built" Palm Beach, and 'imported' the Mediterranean Influence to Florida. He would have done the same for Boca Raton, but the times were changing, as well as the Florida real estate market. As one of his last commissions, he designed 'La Ronda' in the Philadelphia suburbs; his only known mansion in the north. It was totally unusual for the staid Main Line area where it was built; its pink stucco walls, inlaid Spanish-style tiles and leaded-glass windows contrasted drastically with the stone colonials of the area. But that is what makes it absolutely priceless today. Its current owner wants to raze it and put a 'McMansion' or 2 in its place. Mizner's design will be lost in the north forever, as many of his homes in Florida are gone now (El Mirasol, for example). Luckily, many of commissions are still in existence, at least for now.
