5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Reliable
I have tried dozens of different brand of outside, hanging, power filters. Marineland's Emperor filter beats them all in performance and reliability. I've been in this hobby for over 40 years so I know a thing or two about filters. Every tank over 25 gallons should have at least one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
I read all of the great reviews that this product had, but I encountered nothing but problems. First, the pieces it came with did not fit my tank. The short attachment was too short and the long attachment was way too long so I had to cut it. The pump is not strong enough to pull the water up through the attachment no matter how much I cut it and even with it off, the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent!!, July 28, 2007
This review is from: Ml Emperor 280 Filter (Misc.)
I went and did research for the pricing of this filter for a while. I even went as far as going to 5 diffrent aquarium stores and also petco branches. But by far amazon gives the best deal. When it arrived I was so excited I installed it instantly and within 3 - 5 hours water was crystal clear. I have never seen such a great filter. Noise lvl is minimal and filters perfectly. 101% recommended!!! A+++++++++++++

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Filter I've Owned, Well worth it if you've broken filters before, October 18, 2009
This review is from: Ml Emperor 280 Filter (Misc.)
I can't tell you how many cheaper filters I broke prior to owning this one. It was well worth the investment and broke my pattern of buying a new filter every 6 months or so. It finally needed replacement after 3 years, but only because it was damaged during moving.
I have a sand aquarium with african dwarf frogs, but their upkeep isn't that different from most freshwater fish. I would highly recommend this filter to anyone who's tired of breaking filters and wants something tougher. This filter is a champ, and has dealt with an aquarium no other filter could handle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Details on product, June 28, 2008
This review is from: Ml Emperor 280 Filter (Misc.)
The Emperor 280 is a compact (9.375" wide), single Bio-Wheel version of the Emperor Filtration System. And, because it's an Emperor, it's packed with the same one-of-a-kind Emperor design features--flow rate efficiency unmatched by other filters in its class, a cartridge with twice the activated carbon filtration capacity, a media container to hold an additional four ounces of filter media, and superior wet/dry spray bar-driven Bio-Wheel filtration. The Emperor 280 features not one pump (as in ordinary power filters), but two separate water pumps. The Flow Pump directs water through the entire multi-stage filtration system at a certified rate of 280 gallons per hour. The Bio-Pump pressurizes and sends a stream of prefiltered, oxygen-rich water through the spray bar to power-drive the ammonia-fighting Bio-Wheel. And, the Emperor's unique design allows the Bio-Pump to continue powering the Bio-Wheel even when Flow Pump output is reduced (for feeding or maintenance) by the convenient One-Touch Flow Control. A heavy duty Emperor Filter Cartridge provides superior mechanical and chemical filtration--twice the amount of activated carbon filtration and 45% more mechanical filter area than the largest Rite-Size Cartridge. Dense poly fibers trap larger quantities of dirt and unsightly, unhealthy solid waste. Magnum Activated Carbon, the highest grade there is, removes harmful contaminants, odors, and discoloration. A refillable media container holds an additional four total ounces of activated carbon or other chemical filtration media working to maximize pollution removal capacity. An extra large spray bar driven Bio-Wheel delivers classic wet/dry biological filtration. It eliminates toxic ammonia on contact and creates higher oxygen levels, more stable pH, and a healthier environment for fish and plants. In addition, the Emperor 280 is U/L listed. Epoxy-sealed, moisture-proof motor ensures safe operation. It's big tank system technology for the mid-size aquarium. Perfect for marine or freshwater use.

I read all of the great reviews that this product had, but I encountered nothing but problems. First, the pieces it came with did not fit my tank. The short attachment was too short and the long attachment was way too long so I had to cut it. The pump is not strong enough to pull the water up through the attachment no matter how much I cut it and even with it off, the pump had major problems. The product just did not perform as the manufacturer or other customers had testified to. It was way loud and kept up my kids atnight who slept in the next room. I was not impressed and changed back to the free filter that came with the tank - the Tetra Whisper brand.
