5.0 out of 5 stars At long last, Botswana on the world's platter!, February 13, 2010

This review is from: Mma Ramotswe's Cookbook (Hardcover)
This is a very colorful book for the coffee table or for trying southern African culinary. The beautiful pictures and concise recipe texts take the reader around in Mma Ramotswe's style. The book captures the movements of the traditionally-built Mma Ramotswe in a graceful manner. For me, a Motswana living abroad, it triggers the nostalgia of the happiness that cooking is meant to bring to our daily lives. The only little snag for cooks using the metric system is the need to convert to imperial measures.

A really delightful book with interesting tidbits of information about Botswana as well as truly useful, tasty, and easy to make recipes. Nice photos, too. I made the Car-Patchy-Oww! meat dish and it was good. If I can cook something from this book, ANYBODY can do it! The fans of Alexander McCall-Smith and Mma. Ramotswe will really like this book. It is a wonderful addition to the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency library!

Devotees of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency will eat this up. The photography of Botswana's people, places, and foods is lush, and the writing is even better. Stuart Brown's lively text merges seamlessly with quotes from McCall Smith's books. As for the recipes, they're not really the main point here, but all are clearly presented and many are inviting. And if you ever need to know how to roast a haunch of springbok, here you go!

Delightful book! Fun and interesting read. Many wonderful looking recipes, although I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try the Mopane Worms. It is a "Must have" for every fan of Alexander McCall-Smith's No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books and Mma Ramotswe.

Mma Ramotswe has travelled far from her humble beginnings and Stuart Brown has done the original narrative proud in his whimsical wandering way.
As a chef in Botswana I snapped up the book for inspiration and for the expected wry comment on life here, and I have not been disappointed. Although the local 'cuisine' is fairly plain, it is indeed substantial and undemanding (unless you happen to be a member of the bovine crowd, who live well - to a point).

Right of way belongs to livestock in Botswana and the languid pace described in the book(s) is redolent of reality indeed.
I bought a few copies (3) which have winged their respective ways to exotic spaces like Australia.
Reading or cooking, you get the vast sunsets, the whiff of the fire, and the winter bush smells as you trip through recipes and gastronomic admonitions. - not so sure of the doughnuts tho - not so traditional - must have arrived courtesy of an expat....
Oh, and great evocative pics by the way....

I am currently reading "Miracle at Speedy Motors" and was intrigued by the cookbook. I was hoping it would provide insight in to the diet, recipes and customs of Botswana. It does all of that and more.I love the stories linking the cookbook to the series. The pictures are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book but...., July 25, 2011
This review is from: Mma Ramotswe's Cookbook (Hardcover)
I love everything about Mma Ramostwe!! This book is no exception. Sadly it is missing the pumpkin stew recipe that Mma Ramostwe cooks regularly. I was disappointed about that.

This is one of the most beautiful cookbooks that I have ever had! If you love The #1 Ladies Detective Agency series and cooking this cookbook is for you. The photos are wonderful and the recipes easy to follow. So far I have made bush tea, lemon biscuits, and ginger beer. All were winners!
