Mo Beauty is the debut solo release from celebrated singer/songwriter Alec Ounsworth, who earned acclaim with his band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The album was produced by veteran musician/producer and fellow Philadelphian Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Blasters, John Lee Hooker, The Replacements), who initially suggested a New Orleans setting for recording. Working with some of that city s most storied musicians, including George Porter of The Meters on bass, Ounsworth has crafted a collection of songs that pick up where Clap Your Hands Say Yeah leave off. Mo Beauty carries on that band s vein of quirky humor, unashamed melody, and sonic experimentation, but with the weight of New Orleans and its history hovering over the recording, Ounsworth has dug deep on songs like Holy, Holy, Holy Moses (song for New Orleans), while tracks like South Philadelphia groove in a whole new way. Fans of Clap Your Hands will love Mo Beauty and Ounsworth s singular voice, while a whole new audience will respond to the bedrock foundation of the new songs.

I know Alec is somehow attached with another band(Clap Your Hands) but as a stand alone solo album, this is good stuff. Nothing too crazy or anything but just an overall solid album with good tunes. Vocally, his range is a higher pitch and slightly nasally and musically, we are talking modern alternative with piano, guitars and everything. Not a toss off kind of album at all...

I wasn't able to see Alec Ousnworth open for Cold War kids last month in L.A. but I got this record as a consolation. While it lacks any stand out hits such as "Satan said Dance" by Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, it makes up for it in ecclectic sound and experimentation. I like the song "Idiots in the Rain" and the single "Modern Girl (...with Scissors)" is good as well. This past year saw a lot of lead singers venturing out on their own with solo efforts, and this is one of the few of those albums that I did pick up. I wasn't disapointed but still look forward to Ounsworth rejoining with his bandmates from Clap Your Hands.

Alec Ounsworth has a very unique voice which is playful and easy to listen. Definitely fun to listen too if your are ready to be pulled out of your funk.
