Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This lively sketchbook contains decorative graphic spreads and prompts that ask readers to integrate their own words and drawings. Quotations from artists such as O'Keeffe and Picasso invite deeper reflection on making art while loosely introducing themes on line, color, pattern, and texture. Most of the exercises emphasize free expression ("make a self-portrait using your favorite colors"), while others introduce concepts like perspective. Young artists are likely to enjoy the balance between instruction and independent exploration. All ages. (Nov.)

This book inspires creativity! Great for all ages, all levels it provides ideas for creating art beginning in unusual ways. It shows the reader how to find opportunities to make art anywhere and everywhere. These art experiences can be used with various media. They are quick and easy [and fun!] activities which can be built upon for more depth if you choose to take it further. This book encourages spontaneous artistic experimentation.

All you need are thick, colorful, pages, quotes by famous artists, interesting prompts and eye catching artwork, to make a clever little sketchbook. So that's exactly what MOMA did. And all you need to enjoy yourself is a pen, pencil or brush and a bit of time. You can scribble like a kid, doodle or draw like a grown-up. Either way you might just have fun making mistakes and playing among the pages of this very creative book.

This book feels like is really meant for youths, but I find when I'm feeling blocked, the pages of exercises with lines and color can get me back to basics and provide some inspiration. It's a fun book, definitely recommended.

Gave this to my 7 year old cousin for Christmas and she immediately got her markers and started working her way through the book. Future artist in the making!
