This review is from: Te Moana Nui. Exploring Lost Isles of the South Pacific (Paperback)
This book describes a voyage aboard the cruise ship World Discoverer from Tahiti to "lost isles" of Raivavae, Rapa Iti, Marotiri, Mangareva, Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie, Easter Island, Salas y Gomez and Juan Fernandez. Dr Georgia Lee is a well known archaeologist and she outlines the history of each island she visits, followed by her own impressions ashore. Maps and photos are provided. Te Moana Nui is especially useful for its summaries of the various digs undertaken on these detached portions of our earth and the significance of what the excavators found. I recommend this book not only to the student of Polynesian prehistory but to anyone contemplating a journey of their own across this fascinating region. As a footnote, Dr Lee offers a brief account of how the World Discoverer struck a reef in Solomon Islands just a year after she disembarked. No lives were lost, but the ship was beached and finally looted by gunmen from nearby islands. Luckily, the eastern South Pacific is an oasis of peace in comparison.
