Book Description

Reno was the first US city to fully embrace its destiny as a gaming capital, and even before gaming was legalized in 1931 the city was the one place gangsters from Chicago and the Midwest wanted to go for safety, sanctuary, and of course the booze, the broads, and the banking services to launder their kidnapping and hold-up loot.

Bank robbers like Alvin Karpis, kidnappers like Ma Barker and her sons, and even “Baby Face" Nelson came to stay, play, and enjoy the show.

Reno had it all, and they had their own Mob who controlled the vices, legal or otherwise. Eventually Lucky Luciano, Tony Accardo, Sam Giancana and others took note, and joined the easy profits and the skim in Reno. This is the true story. The story of four men who ran things with no remorse. Coercion, arson, murder…………

This is a fun, easy-reading book, not as detailed about Goldfield and Tonopah as “The Roots of Reno." Mob City: Reno centers on the gangs, the swindles, and the casinos. Enjoy!

Regardless if your opinion of organized crime you will find this book fascinating and exciting. Nevada in the early days really had nothing to offer until the mob saw its potential. This book details the dealing of the east coast and the west coast mafia and their battles for the control of Reno, Nevada. This book tells you where the bodies and who done it. You will learn so much about the mob you might be afraid to start your car in the morning. This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining History of Reno and the Mob June 1, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a concise, entertaining, well-written history of the mob's role in the development of Reno, Nevada. The period covered is roughly from 1900 through the 1960s, with a focus on significant events throughout the years, particularly those involving criminal mischief and organized crime. Moe names the main players, includes photographs, and tells their stories with energy, verve, and humor, moves at a fast pace, and never writes a boring sentence. Among the players are George Wingfield, Nick Adelman, James McCay, Bill Graham, John Pettriciani, criminal celebrities (Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson, etc.), Eddie Sahati, Sam Giancana, show biz and political figures (Sinatra, Dean Martin, JFK, Marilyn), and Lucky Luciano. The chapters move through the years in terms of players, major events, ups and downs, and fun and games involved--illegal booze, drugs, gambling, prostitution, swindles, bribery, skimming, money laundering, and so forth. This is a rich and wonderfully entertaining book. It was well researched, and includes a bibliography. Recommended to readers with an interest in Reno history and organized crime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rise of Mafia! November 17, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a fantastic different kind of story telling about the rising of mafia in Reno, Nevada! The writer, Al Moe has very well written the story describing the crimes done by gangsters. It illustrates the cultural imbalances and highlights the pin points on the rise of mafia in Nevada. This was an unusual story line relating Reno’s early days. I enjoyed the reading this with some pictures too.

A fascinating read, laid out nicely, with plenty details on the rise of the mafia in the "biggest little city" Reno, Nevada. Great book for people interested in the old casinos of Reno. I really enjoyed reading it.
