Regardless if your opinion of organized crime you will find this book fascinating and exciting. Nevada in the early days really had nothing to offer until the mob saw its potential. This book details the dealing of the east coast and the west coast mafia and their battles for the control of Reno, Nevada. This book tells you where the bodies and who done it. You will learn so much about the mob you might be afraid to start your car in the morning. This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time.

This is a concise, entertaining, well-written history of the mob's role in the development of Reno, Nevada. The period covered is roughly from 1900 through the 1960s, with a focus on significant events throughout the years, particularly those involving criminal mischief and organized crime. Moe names the main players, includes photographs, and tells their stories with energy, verve, and humor, moves at a fast pace, and never writes a boring sentence. Among the players are George Wingfield, Nick Adelman, James McCay, Bill Graham, John Pettriciani, criminal celebrities (Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson, etc.), Eddie Sahati, Sam Giancana, show biz and political figures (Sinatra, Dean Martin, JFK, Marilyn), and Lucky Luciano. The chapters move through the years in terms of players, major events, ups and downs, and fun and games involved--illegal booze, drugs, gambling, prostitution, swindles, bribery, skimming, money laundering, and so forth. This is a rich and wonderfully entertaining book. It was well researched, and includes a bibliography. Recommended to readers with an interest in Reno history and organized crime.

Mob City by Al Moe is a good descriptive history of the rise of the mafia in Reno, Nevada. I enjoyed reading this book and learning how the mob infiltrated Reno. The book also shows how in many ways the mob made Reno.

A fascinating read, laid out nicely, with plenty details on the rise of the mafia in the "biggest little city" Reno, Nevada. Great book for people interested in the old casinos of Reno. I really enjoyed reading it.

For me this book read like a textbook. It was full of names and facts and dates, and while I usually retain quite a bit from my reading, there isn't a whole lot of specific details about this book that I could tell you at this point. It seems to be very well researched (although I'm not an expert on the history of Reno so it might all be BS for all I really know) and I imagine there may be a time in the future where one of the facts I learned from this book will randomly be useful to me. The writing style, while droll, was pretty clear and concise for the most part. I could have done without most of the author's random comments, although some of them were pretty funny. For what it is, this book was okay.

I think the research that went into this book, and the information obtained from it, could make for a great historical fiction novel or possibly a fictional memoir from the POV of one of the leading figures in Reno. Wingfield would be a great candidate for that. Had this book read more like a story and less like a text book for me, I would have enjoyed it much more, and actually retained more of the information (just the way my brain works). Ultimately, the book isn't bad, but for me it wasn't great.

While I appreciate the research and subject matter, I could not finish this book. I agree with the one review that stated it reads like a text book. I will add that it reads like a disjointed text book. There is no continuity or fluidity which makes it extremely hard to read. I was eager to read this book because I live in the Reno/Sparks area and work in one of the casinos mentioned in the book. Maybe if Mr. Moe hires a decent editor and republishes it, I'll give it another go.

Use to live in Reno and this was an interesting read. We all know how Las Vegas started but never knew about Reno.

I enjoyed this book. I knew a little bit about Las Vegas, but nothing about Reno.
