More About the Author

Al W Moe is the author of five nonfiction books and a novel. As a casino fanatic, he toured the clubs of Nevada taking 100's of photos and gathering interviews and stories from everyone he could convince to talk to him - from slot change people to casino owners.

His non-fiction works chronicle the early days of Nevada casinos and relate the stories of how the Mob influenced gaming, how a "new" face, Howard Hughes, ushered in a change to corporate ownership, and how the casinos have expanded over the years. Each book includes dozens of vintage photos from Las Vegas, Reno, Lake Tahoe, and other Nevada cities.

Moe is also an avid blogger with several popular blogs on sites like Casino Gaming at About.com His latest work for aspiring bloggers is, "The Ultimate Key to Bogging Success," which takes an aspiring blogger from inception and ideas to publicizing, expanding readership, and making long-term money with a blog.

Regardless if your opinion of organized crime you will find this book fascinating and exciting. Nevada in the early days really had nothing to offer until the mob saw its potential. This book details the dealing of the east coast and the west coast mafia and their battles for the control of Reno, Nevada. This book tells you where the bodies and who done it. You will learn so much about the mob you might be afraid to start your car in the morning. This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read in a long time.

This is a concise, entertaining, well-written history of the mob's role in the development of Reno, Nevada. The period covered is roughly from 1900 through the 1960s, with a focus on significant events throughout the years, particularly those involving criminal mischief and organized crime. Moe names the main players, includes photographs, and tells their stories with energy, verve, and humor, moves at a fast pace, and never writes a boring sentence. Among the players are George Wingfield, Nick Adelman, James McCay, Bill Graham, John Pettriciani, criminal celebrities (Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson, etc.), Eddie Sahati, Sam Giancana, show biz and political figures (Sinatra, Dean Martin, JFK, Marilyn), and Lucky Luciano. The chapters move through the years in terms of players, major events, ups and downs, and fun and games involved--illegal booze, drugs, gambling, prostitution, swindles, bribery, skimming, money laundering, and so forth. This is a rich and wonderfully entertaining book. It was well researched, and includes a bibliography. Recommended to readers with an interest in Reno history and organized crime.

What a fantastic different kind of story telling about the rising of mafia in Reno, Nevada! The writer, Al Moe has very well written the story describing the crimes done by gangsters. It illustrates the cultural imbalances and highlights the pin points on the rise of mafia in Nevada. This was an unusual story line relating Reno’s early days. I enjoyed the reading this with some pictures too.

A fascinating read, laid out nicely, with plenty details on the rise of the mafia in the "biggest little city" Reno, Nevada. Great book for people interested in the old casinos of Reno. I really enjoyed reading it.

Use to live in Reno and this was an interesting read. We all know how Las Vegas started but never knew about Reno.
