Very intriguing game. It sparked my interest in getting that Cube across the course to where it had to go to reach it's final home base. It's not easy but it's not supposed to be. Delightful new age synth soundtracks, so appropriate for this kind of trial and error game. Intricate, complex course designs and 48 levels. Don't complain about there not being enough instructions. More detailed instructions than those provided would be the ruin of this game. You're supposed to look, think, discover and brainstorm these puzzles through. It's kind of a "So that's what I'm supposed to do!" game that will leave you feeling rewarded when you figure things out. Your success in completing the level is further celebrated with an animated spray of upward spiraling lights.

Although there was some mention of being able to move the Cube by telekinesis in the description, it did not work for me. Surprise! You must use your finger to flip the cube along and that's a bit of a slippery slope as the color changing neon Cube is not always very cooperative, a little slow to get started, and meets it's demise by falling off the Cube environment frequently(see UPDATE below). And just when you think you may have mastered the sliding finger technique to more smoothly move it 1 or 2 or 3 squares at a time the game introduces obstacles. These will push your Cube over the edge into the abyss or force you to move more quickly and make more precise movements across moving platforms and use transport structures to get you across areas that seem impossible to cross. Sometimes you won't even be able to see your Cube, but a small mini-map in the upper left hand corner of the screen shows you where it is and sight unseen you will still be able to manipulate it. If you place two fingers on the screen you can twist to rotate the angle and try to get a better view of where you're at and where you're going, which is helpful. You collect smaller cubes along the way that will increase you speed. Rolling the big Cube onto a switch will suddenly change or open up new possibilities for progressing further. A question mark(?) appears at certain points and if you roll your Cube onto it, it will give you a visual hint as to how to proceed.

Are the controls bad? Some people will probably say so. A few times I accidently brought up a Menu when my finger got too close to the screen's edge which paused the game and was a bit annoying. I think I will probably get better at this with practice. The Menu system itself is confusing and needs simplification. I will reserve further judgement until I've played a little longer, but this is such an ingenious idea for a game and possibly a "hidden gem" that I'm willing to keep trying. I was reminded of Portal 1 and 2 when I started this game but Portal is a computer game with rock solid controls and a completely different concept except that it also uses a cube. Here you're going to have to live with the imperfections of more delicate touch control devices if you want to give this game a chance and experience what it has to offer.

From what I've seen so far there is only one way to complete a level. The game is scored on how long you took to complete it so you can always go back once you know what you SHOULD have done and try to beat your previous time. There is an options setting that allows you to race against your "ghost" from that previous attempt. Cool idea. You also get a letter score for each level. (Played well on the Fire HD--will work best with larger screens)

Tips: Gray tiles are not as solid as they appear, move quickly or they disintegrate. A large cube can only climb up one stacked cube. A tiny cube can scale tall walls, just not the gray ones. The mini-map and screen rotation are your best friends in Edge. There is a way to move the D-pad from one side of the screen to the other by quickly touching it's center and then quickly down swiping on the other side of the screen but this is pretty hit or miss and worked less than 50% of the time for me. Play in landscape mode.

Note: There is also something called "edging" that gives you a simple sort of achievement. I'll let you discover what that's all about for yourself.

UPDATE: When I first reviewed this game I didn't notice that the controls could be switched from finger sliding to tilt or a D-pad(arrows) until some others reviewers(thanks Sam98 & wik) pointed it out. Tilt is pretty iffy. The D-pad is so much better than finger sliding, enough so that I've bumped my rating up to 5-stars from 4; for that and the elegant surprises built into each level. A respectful bow to this imaginative developer!

Comment: If you mark my review as not being helpful please have the courtesy of leaving a comment to tell me why. I'd really like to know. I take a lot of time to test the apps I review (so you don't have to) with only the hope that it will be helpful to some people in deciding if they want it or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars This game is a grade A game with C- controls! October 7, 2012

Game playing:

You have a colored block and your task is to roll the block around a 3D maze and collect smaller colored blocks by rolling over them. If you roll off the maze or fall through a hole your block comes back but your grade score declines. The 3D maze has some moving parts and it can change shape and either help you or in some cases cause problems. There are even some tiles that fall as you cross them so be careful.

There are some smaller gray colored squares on the maze surface that change your direction in the way you want to go and they can be helpful. They can also act as switches to change the maze. The music is light and very nice, a sort of light Jazz. I used the finger controls and frankly this was the only thing that wasn't perfect about this game. I found the finger controls to be difficult to use for fine movement control. If you wanted to get the cube to move one square and stop it is difficult. I fell off the edge of the maze several times, hence the name Edge! Once you get rolling you can also get rolling too fast and move too far. There are question marks on the surface of the maze and rolling onto them provides directions to route your cube through some of the more interesting obstacles.

Home screen:
* Play - Set difficulty level and bonus levels
* Options - Allows you to adjust the controls, sounds, music, language and ghost. You can also view the credits.
* Mobigames - Provides links to the Mobigame website, Facebook and Twitter.

What I Like:

This is a unique and well-designed puzzle game and it is fun to play. The graphics are very well designed and the concept is entertaining. There are 48 levels and each one is a new challenge in its own right. There are also moving portions of the maze that will shove your cube around and make the game more challenging. I liked this game and feel that it is one of the better ones we have gotten. In the upper LH corner is a map of the maze and it shows you where you are in the maze and the location of the bonus cubes. You can use your fingers to twist the maze on the screen to look at it in a different perspective or to change it from portrait to landscape mode.

What I don't like:

I could not adjust the difficulty level and the bonus level controls and after about 20 tries I gave up.
The movement controls are just downright hard. In one difficult level I fell off the edge of the maze at least ten times in a row. When you want to have the cube to move it doesn't want to and when you take your finger off of the maze and cube it keeps on rolling. While this may make the game more fun for some people, I found it to be a pain. I tried the tilt mode and found it to be even worse. The controls are far too touchy and as a result it makes you adjust the way you play the game and it becomes actually worse. I became fidgety trying to do it right.

Summary:

I found the game play and concept of the game to be fun and challenging. The controls are poor in my opinion and I am sure there will be a lot of discussion on this topic!

Is the game good, yes! Is it worth $2.99, not with the controls the way they are now. I would pay $.99 or maybe even $1.99. Fix the controls to be smoother and it is a real winner.

Grades:

Concept - grade A
Graphics - grade A
Sound and music - grade A
Controls - grade C-
Inability to set difficulty level and bonus levels - grade D

The size is 22.6 MB compressed but uncompressed to a large 42.36MB.

I got this game in the Android Humble Bundle not too long ago, but I'm excited to have it officially for my Kindle too. It's so much fun to play, and the music is stunning (so make sure you have a pair of earphones to listen to it loud with!).

You push a block around to grab little colored blocks, and then to the end of the level (that's as easy as I can explain it), it gets harder overtime as the layouts change, and then you have obstacles and moving floors. Simple gameplay, but easily playable to the end. Did I mention it has an awesome beautiful soundtrack too (I REALLY mean it, haha)?
