5.0 out of 5 stars WiMAX : Next Broadband Revolution, May 27, 2008
This review is from: Mobile Broadcasting with WiMAX: Principles, Technology, and Applications (Focal Press Media Technology Professional Series) (Paperback)
Usually I like to read books only to gain knowledge or to learn more about specific topics. This book got me interested because there has been recently too many articles and discussions across all sections of media covering Sprint-Nextel deal. I always wanted to know why would Time-Warner-AOL, Comcast be interested in WiMAX? What is there for them? How is it different from 3G, LTE cellular technologies? What makes it so attractive to ISP's as well as Teleco's across the globe?

The author goes in depth to cover basics and advanced topics with ease. My background is more towards IP core networking, but was able to easily understand the language used in the book. Book covers important questions like Why WiMAX; Technical details of WiMAX pertaining to broadcast; business case of WiMAX.

Details on topics such as QoS and MBS service specific to broadcast applications have been discussed at length and by giving real world examples and diagrams , author has made a great attempt to simplify a difficult subject.

Whenever there is a talk about a new technology, it is quiet important to compare it with old existing standards and its impact on society. The books covers IPTV, Microsoft TV, and WiMAX and their impact on the existing technologies.

The book covers not only the US market, but also Europe and Asia. Emphasis on differentiating it with 3G cellular networks has also been made.

Overall, I am really impressed by the book and would recommend it to readers interested in knowing about transport of multimedia content in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars WiMAX impact on Multimedia delivery, May 22, 2008
This review is from: Mobile Broadcasting with WiMAX: Principles, Technology, and Applications (Focal Press Media Technology Professional Series) (Paperback)
I purchased this book three weeks ago and I 100% recommend this book for readers interested in finding out the technology, business model of multimedia broadcast over WiMAX networks. Upon reading, one can understand the deal making that recently made news i.e. Sprint-Clearwire-Google-Cable Warner etc.

This book covers the old technologies and its possible evolution path towards embracing WiMAX as a delivery medium. The author does provide an understanding of Microsoft IPTV as well as current broadcast capabilities of 3G networks.

One would hope the next revision focuses on comparisons of broadcast over LTE and WiMAX.

I will recommend this book to technology lovers and hope they will like it as I did.

thanks
