Excellent book by an excellent author,
By Ellie "Ellie" (Atlanta, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mobile Computing And Wireless Communications: Applications, Networks, Platforms, Architectures and Security (Paperback)
Many people claim to provide "a comprehensive and complete discussion", but looking at it closely reveals something very different. This book is a definite exception. The author claims to provide a complete and comprehensive covergae of managent plus business issues of this vast field -- and he delivers! The book covers business issues (M-Business, M-Government, regulations, standards, the business landscape), mobile applications (m-commerce, mobile EB apps, location sensitive applications, wireless sensor apps, mobile agent apps), mobile computing platforms (WAP, i-mode, MMIT, Mobile web services, BREW, J2ME), and wireless networks (802.11, UWB, Bluetooth, sensor networks, satellites, wireless local loops, 2.5/3G/4G cellular, free space optics, adhoc networks). My favorite are the last 3 chapters that cover architectures, integration, security, and management issues as a way to tie all pieces nicely. The examples and case studies are numerous (and some even funny). Around 700 pages of solid and well written material for less than $50 -- what a deal! Highly recommended.

A surprisingly easy read for technical as well as business topics,
By Bert Lansing "Bert" (Cleveland, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mobile Computing And Wireless Communications: Applications, Networks, Platforms, Architectures and Security (Paperback)
This book was used as a text book in a course on wireless communications that I took. In most cases, I do not enjoy reading text books - I use them (of course) but do not necessarily enjoy them. This book is a real nice exception.
The book is comprehensive in coverage - it explains technical as well as business issues in mobile applications (this includes m-commerce, location-based services, sensor apps), mobile computing platforms (mobile app servers, mobile web services, J2ME), wireless networks (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, wireless local loops, cellular networks, satellites, FSO, UWB, sensor networks), architectures (integration of different technologies), wireless security (networks to apps), and management (wireless network planning and management). It is extremely well written and is full of real-life case studies and examples. The author's command of the subject matter is incredible. After going through this book, I really feel that I have a good understanding of the overall field and not just one element of it. Just great. |
