Not long ago I downloaded the free version of EasyTether and took it for a test drive. Simply put, this app is excellent. It's simple to install and simple to use. Adding the EasyTether driver to your PC is equally simple. Three minutes after I installed this app I was up and running. I'm using this app as my notebook's internet connection to submit this review. I found this app at half price on the Amazon App Store today so I went ahead and paid for the full version (which allows access to the whole internet, including 'https://' secure URLs).

As a utility app like this should, it stays unobtrusively in the background. To use, simply plug your phone into a USB port on your notebook or PC, start the EasyTether app, select 'USB - Enable to allow USB tethering', and then start the PC-side driver program (I keep that program in my system tray for easy, instant access. I right click on the tray icon, select "Connect via Droid X", and off I go!).

The one area people may have a problem with is speed. I normally use RoadRunner broadband with between 7 and 10 Mbps throughput, with bursts up to 20 Mbps. Using to test connection speed with EasyTether, I find that throughput speeds are very slow in comparison - averaging .46 Mbps download and .38 Mbps upload speeds over the course of three tests. (Droid X uses 3G; 4G speeds will probably be considerably faster - also, 3G signal where I live is not full-strength). In other words, at least for me, speed is about 20 times less than my wired broadband connection. When you watch Youtube videos or other high-bandwidth type streaming media, unless you put the media on "pause" until it's fully loaded, it is a bit herky-jerky as playback is paused while more video data is buffered.

I've been using EasyTether for over a year now. Even after 2.1 come out which allowed you to tether, because with Verizon you have pay a monthly fee to use the built in tethering.

For those who say you're stupid to use this because you can just root your phone... that might be fine for you, but some of us don't want to recommend to a family\friend who might not be that tech savvy that they root their phone simply to be able to tether. To me, $10 is worth the hassle to NOT have to root your phone.

My Droid X phone has an "unlimited" Verizon Wireless data plan, but using the phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot requires a separate data plan that would cost me at least $30/per month more and has caps on usage. This app allows me to use my phone's existing unlimited wireless data plan with my notebook computer by simply connecting the two together with a USB cable. While there may be so-called "free" solutions for those who are willing to risk Rooting (hacking) their phones, I found this solution to be simple, cost-effective and far less risky.

Like me, my wife often finds herself needing an Internet connection while traveling. Many airports, hotels and other public places charge significant amounts for such connections and there is always a risk of being tricked and hacked by a fake hotspot. When she saw how well this application worked on my Droid X phone, she asked me to help her purchase and install this app on her Droid 2 phone, so she could use it to connect her 64-bit Windows 7 notebook computer to the Internet. Now we're a "two-app EasyTether" family. Recently she replaced her Droid 2 with a Droid 4. EasyTether easily installed on her new 4G phone and provides an even faster connection.

In order to download and install the small driver for this app on your computer, you'll need an existing Internet connection. Or you can download the driver to your phone and install it on your computer via a USB cable. There are driver versions for Windows XP, Windows 7 (32 & 64), Macintosh and Linux Ubuntu. I successfully installed and tested the two Windows versions with five different Verizon Droid phones.

Your connection speed will, of course, be dependent upon the quality of your wireless phone signal.

I have the Verizon Samsung Charge - one of the G4 phones. It can act as an access point for multiple devices via bluetooth, BUT there is a monthly fee, currently $20/month.

This app allows you to connect one device (in my case a laptop) to the internet for free.

You have to tether your phone to the device using a usb cord. The phone does stay charged while you are using it.

The phone has to be disconnected just right or else I get a blank screen the next time I try to start-up my laptop (a Samsung i7) from hibernation.

After having to start-up my laptop using function f8 several times, I think I have found the correct combination to do.

1. Turn off the app on the laptop
2. Turn off the app on the phone
3. Use the Safely remove hardware and turn off the phone.
4. Then unplug the phone from the laptop.

I also set the app on the laptop so that it does NOT automatically search for the phone connection.

Now I am not receiving the blank screen on my laptop (and having to check the integrity of my drives, etc).

Using the app is a little slower than a good wireless connection and I have some trouble if more than one window is open. But, it works!

Just moved and don't have internet connection yet (Can't believe the time and frustration level in dealing with internet and cable TV providers. They all seem to think one has an internet connection and should use it for contacting them!). This app has really been helpful to me!!

Will it work on an AT&T account not setup for tethering?
Yes, it does work without the Mobile Hotspot feature enabled, and it works like a charm.
The sad part is there is a 'BUT'! I just got a letter from AT&T saying they had detected I was tethering and that I must buy the tethering plan for $45/mo for 4Gb - that if I didn't cease and desist they... Read More
