This review is from: Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, Volume 2 (Paperback)
In the second installment of Kazuhisa Kondo's take on the Mobile Suit Gundam series, we find Matilda and the Medea supply plane makes it to White Base but it's not long before the White Base sets right out again and is pursued by Garma and Char. The White Base avoids contact by hiding in a bombed out shelter and Char ends up tricking Garma into falling for the White Base's trap and ultimately exacts his revenge by getting Garma killed in battle. Amuro then gets a little time off and sets off to find his mother and discovers she volunteers at a camp where some Zeons come by periodically to harass the citizens. Amuro shoots and kills a Zeon soldier that almost discovered him and Amuro's mother is horrified at the mudering war machine her son has become. Amuro tells her it wasn't his decision to kill for war and sets out to destroy a Zeon base with the Gundam. After Amuro's massacre, Zeon ace Ramba Ral gets introduced as the man trying to exact revenge for Garma's death with his new machine; the Gouf and their land battleship the Gallop. Ramba attacks the Gundam and is beating him but is forced to retreat. Sayla decides to take the Gundam out for a spin in order to find a soldier to interrogate about Char Aznable really being her brother Casval; since she saw him briefly I nthe first volume of Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. Sayla and the others capture a Zaku pilot and hold him prisoner but he dies trying to escape the White Base right as Ramba is attacking again. Ramba is forced yet again to retreat and Bright sees Amuro as a mere boy acting out on his emotions. From the base attack to launching in the Guntank in battle instead of the Gundam. Amuro overhears Bright mentioning his worthlessness and Amuro takes the Gundam and leaves the White Base crew with one less Gundam and one less Newtype...

So, in this second volume, it's still following the show pretty closely. When Amuro finds his mother, it's a bit more dramatic since when Amuro shoots the Zeon soldier, his gun goes off and kills a few volunteer civilians. It makes the scene more gripping and really explains why Amuro is so haunted by it. Amuro makes it worse by attacking the nearby base and this manga adaption really makes that scene a bit gorier and more sad by showing the soldiers getting blown to pieces by the Gundam's Vulcans and showing one poor soldier walking around with a missing arm. The detail was really disturbing as you could see their heads and body parts being blown away as Amuro lays waste to everyone at the base. I think this was really how that scene was intended but, when doing the T.V. Show, it must've been watered down a bit. Amuro's childishness is shown a bit more but overall this volume ended up being even better than the first. We get to see the Gouf in action for the first time (even though it was shown in one panel in the first volume) as well as the Gallop. The Anti-Air Guntank makes a return as well. I really enjoyed this volume and recommend it to any Gundam fan out there!
