About the Author

Hokkaido native Yoshikazu Yasuhiko(1947-) is a Japanese animator and manga artist. His career as a character designer has spanned over four decades, creating famed characters for such anime as Super Atragon, Brace Raideen, and the widely known Mobile Suit Gundam. Considered a pivotal player in mecha and sci-fi anime, Yasuhiko's characters, stories and illustrations are unmistakable in their style and serve as timeless examples as pioneers of manga and animation in Japan.

Yasuhiko began his career as an animator in Osama Tezuka's Mushi Productions, and later on decided to go freelance to work for a number of animation productions for both film and television. In the late 70's, Yasuhiko would turn his attention to the world of comics, as he has since penned nearly two dozen titles since.

In 1981 he was awarded the Nebula Award by the Japanese Sci-Fi Association.
In 1990 his work Namuji won the Japan Comic Artist Association Grand Prize
And in 2000 he took the Japan Media Arts Award for Best Comic with his title A Revolutionary Dog.

The third volume of Gundam: The Origin has arrived from Vertical in the same hardcover, manga-style format as the other two books that precede it. This time covering the story arc revolving around the Great Blue Star himself; Ramba Ral. As White Base makes its way toward Jaburo, they are attacked by Kycilia's own Ramba Ral and his deadly fighting unit. Flanked by Zaku IIs, Ramba Ral uses his new model Gouf Mobile Suit to wear down the Trojan Horse and draw out Amuro and the Gundam as well as crippling his enemy. However, Amuro and the crew of the White Base must take charge and fight Ramba Ral as the old soldier he is; even if it means hand-to-hand combat!

We're treated to a younger-looking, more lean Ramba Ral than what was in the anime. Aside from that, this volume goes toe-to-toe with the events in the anime pretty well. We are introduced to some new Federation Mobile Suit models as well as some amphibious Zeon prototypes in two very brief scenes as the story leads into Jaburo but ultimately, this covers everything about Ramba Ral and at nearly 500 pages, it darn well should. We're still treated to the beautiful color pages that adorn the beginning and end to each act as well as the breathtaking art on each and every page. Like the other volumes, this one really makes you feel like you're watching a movie instead of reading a book and, despite the lengthy page count, makes you not want to put it down until you reach the very last page.

The Gouf MS itself really steals the show at times as it's portrayed as a really scary, menacing Mobile Suit in all its appearances.

This is my girlfriend's account but she is the one who bought this book for me on my birthday. I love Gundam. It has been my favorite anime since I was a little boy. I have the previous 2 books and with the third one now in my hands my collection is up to date. This series is great for those in to the mecha genre. I love the soft feeling of the hard cover as well.

The 3rd installment of Mobile Suit Gundam the Origin is simply beautiful! The story moves forward with the White Base crew on Earth continuing its journey to Jaburo after their encounters with Garma Zabi. We are introduced to Ramba Ral and his Gouf type mobile suit in this volume. The book is mainly in black and white but like Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 incorporates beautiful color pages throughout the book. At the end of Vol.3 there are some wonderful colored art work pages featuring Amuro and Ramba Ral. There is also a bonus at the end which I wont spoil but is a nice addition to the volume. I love how these books are being produced as Hardcovers and will look fantastic on a shelf one day as a complete set. This is a must have for any Gundam fan of the Universal Century era and a great introduction into the Gundam universe for people who have not seen the anime or other Gundam works.

I cannot even find the words to accurately express how great this ongoing series is. It's safe to say it's so much better than the original show, and not just due to the fact that it aged not so great, these books go into much better detail than the show ever did with regards to character and plot development. It just flows, and you fall in love with all the characters.

This is coming from a huge gundam fan, I've seen them all. This is the best gundam manga you can ever find.

Keeps up the quality and brilliance of this retelling of the classic tale of Mobile Suit Gundam by making it new all over again without taking away any of the elements that make it such a great story.

I have nothing bad to say about the Origin series except for this one thing... The translation has made a bad habit of changing (ever so slightly) the really iconic/well established quotes made by important character during important scenes. Because of this, most fans who know the story and the original dialogue by heart are brought out of the experience (ever so slightly) any time something of importance is said or done...... The most extreme example of this is the opening narration at the start of each volume. Unfortunately (but not too unfortunate) the opening narration varies greatly from the western translation of the TV series/Movies that western fans have come to know. And since this release of the Origin manga is FOR the western audience, I struggle to think of any reasons why it would be changed. EVERYTHING else about these releases is just perfect. If you want to know specifically whats so good about them, read every other review on amazon.

I chose the 5 star rating because these books make my son very happy when he gets them. He has loved Gundam since the 80s
