5.0 out of 5 stars The one that started it all
Here it is, sports fans, the original "Mobile Suit Gundam"; accept no substitutes. Young Amaro Ray finds himself in the middle of a war, and in the cockpit of the Earth Federation's most advance secret weapon. Naturally, since he's a genius (and his dad designed the Gundam), he quickly figures out how to operate it, saving his colony from destruction by the Principality...

This review is from: Mobile Suit Gundam, Vol. 1: The Battle Begins! (DVD)
Here it is, sports fans, the original "Mobile Suit Gundam"; accept no substitutes. Young Amaro Ray finds himself in the middle of a war, and in the cockpit of the Earth Federation's most advance secret weapon. Naturally, since he's a genius (and his dad designed the Gundam), he quickly figures out how to operate it, saving his colony from destruction by the Principality of Zeon. Naturally, since he's the only one who knows how to work the darn thing, he is quickly drafted into the Earth Federation Army (or Navy, whatever).

Over the course of 42 episodes (the first 5 of which are on this DVD), Amaro and his companions must fight for survival against overwhelming odds, uncertain supply lines, and the constant attacks of the "Red Comet", Char Aznable, the Zeons' ace pilot. Amaro establishes the now-familiar Gundam theme of "young rookie pilot makes good", while Char establishes a similar theme of "blond bad guys (with cool nicknames) wearing masks".

Overall, this is a high-quality series that is more focused on storytelling than merchandising, and all of the discs have great Special Features. My rating: 10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Mobile Suit Gundam... hmm, not bad..., September 21, 2008

This review is from: Mobile Suit Gundam, Vol. 1: The Battle Begins! (DVD)
Vol. 1 The Battle Begins, the intro to what started the Real Robot mecha genre and essentially revolutionized today's anime, and after witnessing firsthand the first five eps, it was worth it.

What I(and probably everyone) first noticed was the animation. I was "oh crap, maybe not so good..." but after seeing some explosions, not to mention the sound effects to them, my opinion was completely changed, almost instantanously! The graphics are like 80's classic Transformers, and since I loved Transformers, I didn't mind the dub at all(I already don't mind dubs too much...).

Speaking of, there is no sub, both literal subtitles AND jap audio. Some might be driven away by this, but I say suck it up, and watch the darn classic! The only known voice actor I can identify is veteran Brad Swaile of Light from Death Note. Amuro and Brad can almost be one person, and it makes sense how it is this series that made him famous. Not just Amuro though, everyone have excellent performances, including Char and Bright. The dub is no choice, so if you absolutely hate dub, just sit and watch and it will just grow on you.

The story is also unique. Amuro, one of the most well known mecha pilots, is only a lowly 15-year old, who took the Gundam as a necessity, not for glory, or proof of existance. To be honest, they created a good scenario for him learning to control it. And his first battle was both impressive, and spectacular.

I won't reveal much else about the vol.(I myself should buy this, Zeta, and Char Counter), but only that as far as classics go, Gundam is fun, and alluring. Buy Mobile Suit Gundam now!

5.0 out of 5 stars the one to show the anime haters in your life, July 20, 2008
This review is from: Mobile Suit Gundam, Vol. 1: The Battle Begins! (DVD)
The One year War of The Gundam series is probably the most epic event in anime

this is the series to show ppl who don't get why you like anime if they still don't get it then I bet there movie collection includes battlefield earth and Gili

this series has everything love, mystery, war, death, revenge, heroism, and GIANT FRAKING ROBOTS!

you really care for these characters and when events happen to them you feel it like your part of the crew

while Seed tells basically the same story you can't beat the original

4.0 out of 5 stars not english mothertongue, October 5, 2004
This review is from: Mobile Suit Gundam, Vol. 1: The Battle Begins! (DVD)
it is really nice to see gundam in my dvd player, but since I am not english mothertongue I would have appreciated english subtitles to allow me to understand the dialogues better.
I wish that my suggestion will be considered if there will be other releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than Just Mecha, October 1, 2006
This review is from: Mobile Suit Gundam, Vol. 1: The Battle Begins! (DVD)
Here we have it, Tomino's classic "Mobile Suit: Gundam." The first disk sets a lot of groundwork, but you can't really say that it sets all the groundwork. Throughout the series, characters come, go, and change; there's a lot more to the story than giant robots. The beginning of the series is also great for drawing those stark lines that seem so clear but blur so quickly once the story progresses.

You'll probably watch this for the mech battles, which are really fun, but you'll most likely watch it again for the characters and the story.

Seig Zeon!
