Book Description

Bloom's Notes October 1995
In his introduction Harold Bloom suggests that the tragic protagonist of Moby-Dick, Captain Ahab, has only a few peers among American literary characters--though none wholly of his eminence. This text includes a brief biography of Melville, thematic and structural analysis of the work, and numerous essays by the best critics of the novel.

This series is edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University; Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Professor of English, New York University Graduate School. These texts are the ideal aid for all students of literature, presenting concise, easy-to-understand biographical, critical, and bibliographical information on a specific literary work. Also provided are multiple sources for book reports and term papers with a wealth of information on literary works, authors, and major characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moby Dick, Revisited and Dissected, April 19, 2011

What's up with Ahab? Why the whale anatomy detail? Where did the American frontier end--or did it?

As discussion leader for my book group, the book's analyses and interpretations of Moby Dick enabled me to reach deeply into Melville's challenging story. It's been a long time since my college humanities classes and I had to prepare to lead a discussion of Melville's complex symbolism and opinions. This book provided an excellent refresher course and extended my thinking. Consequently, my fellow readers and I shared a literary experience that reawakened us to the pleasure and growth of reading deeply.
