Book Description

October 28, 2002 8 and up3 and up
Killing a sixty-ton sperm whale that could destroy a boat with a flick of its massive tail was no easy task. Whalemen of the early nineteenth century were not just hunters, they were also explorers—sailing on the uncharted sea in search of some of the largest creatures on earth. The most famous whale of all? Moby Dick.
Here are Ishmael, Queequeq, Ahab, and of course, Moby Dick, rendered anew in a dynamic comic book adaptation of one of the greatest American novels ever written. The book also includes information about Herman Melville, facts about whales, and the history of the whaling industry. With all the flare and blaze of Melville’s original story, Moby Dick is sure to intrigue a new generation of readers with this fast-paced and electric portrayal of the famous battle between man and beast.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The great white resurfaces in this gripping, comic book-style retelling. Comic-strip veterans Schwartz and Giordano condense Melville's leviathan tale into an action-packed, 48-page adventure. Despite forgoing Melville's "Call me Ishmael" first-person narrative and sensory details, this retelling closely adheres to the original plot, including some pivotal scenes absent from Allan Drummond's spare but entertaining 1997 Moby Dick. The dense story clips along, thanks to concise but appealingly hammy storytelling and melodramatic drawings, plus multiple panels that quicken the pace. When Ishmael meets Queequeg, for instance, the author squeezes out every drop of suspense: "There in the dimly lit room looms the forbidding image of Queequeg... harpoon at the ready, poised to sink its sharp head into his shaking body!!" Giordano ratchets up the tension with a series of close-ups of Ishmael's terrified face as he awakens to the "savage" in his rented room. The brooding, dark-toned panels exude imminent danger-an ideal milieu for Captain Ahab's doomed voyage. The book also provides a brief biography of Melville, as well as facts about whaling and New Bedford, Mass., the city that commissioned this retelling in celebration of the 150th anniversary (in 2001) of Moby Dick's original publication. Ages 8-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-In trimming Melville's leviathan novel down to picture-book length, some of what made the original so intriguing is inevitably lost; what this version retains is the main action of the story and details of life at sea. The former is captured admirably by dramatic illustrations that have a classic comic-book feel. Unfortunately, the flow of the story is often confusing: the loss of a first-person narrator relegates Ishmael to near nonexistence; the flow of images can be disjointed, leaving readers wondering what panel to read next; and the text, while suitably hyperbolic, is awkwardly reliant on ellipses and exclamation marks. Just as in the original tale, information on whalers and whaling appears throughout the work, yet here the handling is uneven. "Ambergris" is clarified in a side panel, "captor pilings" go unexplained, and "scrimshaw" is mentioned in one of three short essays (on Melville; whales; and New Bedford, CT) that bookend the main text. Readers looking for an introduction to Melville's most famous work may find this title useful; otherwise, it is an additional purchase, particularly for those who already own Will Eisner's mythic comic adaptation (NBM, 2001) or those lucky enough to have acquired Bill Sienkiewicz's breathtaking "Classics Illustrated" edition (Berkley, 1990).

5.0 out of 5 stars Inviting Version of Great American Classic, February 26, 2003
This review is from: Moby Dick (Hardcover)
The famous Melville story is brought to life for young readers in a comic book style rendition. This time, it is told in the third person, and does not begin, "Call me Ishmael."

An excellent introduction to the life of Melville and the adventures he had prior to writing "Moby Dick" serves as a preface. An essay on whales and whaling concludes the book, providing a context for the story.

The build-up of the mythical whale intensifies page-by-page with careful flashback and foreshadowing.

I fully recommend this version of "Moby Dick."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for introducing Moby Dick to reluctant readers!, October 20, 2005
This review is from: Moby Dick (Hardcover)
We are a classical homeschool family and we LOVED this book. Reluctant readers will actually want to read it! Some of the vocabulary is difficult for a 2nd or 3rd grader, but it is a very fun read. The illustrations are captivating and the story is presented in an interesting way. My kids loved this book so much they walked around for weeks (limping like Ahab) saying things like, "Arrr, me hearties!", and "Thar she blows!" In addition, this book contains information on the whaling industry and the sperm whale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moby Dick, December 2, 2002

"bhbook" (new york city) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Moby Dick (Hardcover)
If you're looking for an exciting way to introduce your kids to the classics, this 'retelling'of Moby Dick is it. The author and illustrator(Lew Sayre Schwartz & Dick Giordano)manage to stay faithful to Melville's original tale while condensing it into 48 pages of adventure and danger. The interplay of the scary, cartoonlike illustrated panels and the gripping, dramatic text is perfect for kids. A 9-year-old of my acquaintance actully put his Game Boy aside to read this book. He was completely caught up in the suspense on every page. One example: a close-up drawing of a terrified Ishmael when he meets Queequeg for the first time, matched with this text, "There in the dimly lit room looms the forbidding image of Queequeg...harpoon at the ready, poised to sink its sharp head into his shaking body!!". I should add that the 9-year-old's father was also caught up in this Moby retelling, having lots of fun shouting out the story's most famous line, "Thar she blows!". A bonus is the brief bio of Melville, and information about whales and whaling, all written in an entertaining, kid-friendly manner. Kids will love this book, so will you.
