Frank Muller's audio book brings "Moby Dick" to life!,

This review is from: Moby Dick (Unabridged) (Audio Cassette)
I have always been intimidated by the size of "Moby Dick." But recently this great American classic has come up in various conversations and other writings I've encountered, so I decided to listen to the audio book, read by Frank Muller.
There is good reason that this book is considered a classic. It gives the reader (or listener) an inside view into the lives of 18th century whalers. It's an epic world travel adventure (by sea, of course). It provides incredible detail into 18th century knowledge of whales and whaling, as well as ships, ship life, etc. On top of this there's a good dose of theology and philosophy. It would not be an overstatement to say that "Moby Dick" is perhaps the longest commentary on the Book of Jonah ever written. And of course, it's a great tale about the futility of revenge. Frank Muller's reading brings a cast of characters to life. It was a pure joy each day to listen to his characterizations as I drove about in my car. Highly recommended.

Wow, what a fantastic reading Frank Muller gives. He's engaging, clear, adroit with multiple voices and keeps it moving at a steady clip. Best of all, his dramatization -- emotion, pacing, etc -- are deeply affecting. Highly recommend.

Muller has to be the greatest reader of all time. That voice!
Melville can hold his own with any writer, of course. He is on everyone's list of the greatest writers. Put the two together and you'll never forget the pleasure. It's a whale of an experience. (Sorry)

As we move into the 21st century, the BOOK Moby Dick becomes more and more daunting as "a read." We have neither the time or patience to deal with mid-19th century prose, much less Melville's range of ideas and circumstances in his leviathan tome. For many, Moby Dick has become a masterpiece too far.
Happily, I found the Muller recording in my local library. He is a superb "realizer" of this difficult book, and incarnates Melvilles tale like no other. Great for long drives or when you are out for a walk or run - just make sure you don't get too engrossed and step out in front of a car! |
