Buy this book. Twice.
Once for your child, (nieces, nephews or friends)
and once again for yourself.

It is the product of that all too uncommon, serendipitous event
that results from the pairing of a gifted visual artist with an author
who uncovers truths in the most lyrical and poetic way.

An audience’s perceptions are shaped by the knowledge and experience
they bring to a work. I’ve read Melville’s “Moby Dick” (more than once) and visited the New Bedford Whaling Museum (many times); so the story of the slaughter of whales and in particular the “white whale” is familiar ground.

Yet Brian Heinz’s book still manages to engage, excite and surprise the reader.
This is tribute to his skill as a storyteller. It is evident that his writing is informed
by voluminous readings, original sourced research (made over a lifetime of interest
and inquiry) concerning whaling, the sea and the “men who go down to it in ships”.

There is veracity in the details, but Heinz is never pedantic. The ring of truth in every facet serves to advance and enhance the tale. This and his ability to
craft language so beautifully makes all the difference. Heinz’s writing is cut to the bone and straddles the fine line between poetry and prose.

Heinz’s storytelling brings out the best in illustrator Randall Enos’s vibrant linocuts.
Enos’s work for “Mocha Dick” may be the finest of his oeuvre.
The name Enos is a common one among Cape Verde islanders, many of whom crewed on whaling ships. A captain Manuel Enos was a master scrimshaw artist
and whaling man during the nineteenth century. I wondered if there was a connection here.

Eno’s graphics work on many levels.

Mocha Dick is powerful, evocative and enduring. It's a book for children and their parents, because it works on multiple levels. Children will love the thrilling and harrowing true tale of Mocha Dick, while parents will be excited to learn how Herman Melville was inspired to his legendary novel, Moby Dick. Everyone will be struck by the amazing illustrations: painstakingly created carvings which bring scrimshaw to mind. This book would be an excellent addition to a classroom, but I also hope that parents will read it to their children. It's proof that learning can be thrilling. Didactic, this book is not. Brian Heinz has always chosen precise imagery in his stores, and Mocha Dick is no exception. Bravo!

I recently purchased Mocha Dick for my nephew. Prior to giving books as gifts, I always read them first :) Mocha Dick has just enough suspense and action with a well-disguised history lesson. Love when a book makes learning enjoyable! It's an adventurous fun read that parents will also enjoy. An excellent choice for the classroom due to it's educational value.

The colorful action packed illustrations by Randall Enos bring this historical story to life.
