Garage Band with Style, December 16, 1998

Beware, this TNT are not to be confused with the more well known TNT that you may have heard on your favourite classic rock station. And this is a good thing. This TNT were a bunch southern guys with some great taste in music. This collection of recordings mines some of their obvious influences. The album is sprinkled with cover songs of The Small Faces, The Left Banke, Roky Erickson, etc. However, TNT also use their love of pop and rock to create some great songs of their own (think of them as a less bombastic Raspberries with more of a garage band mentality). The best thing about the album are the two tracks "Pedestal" and "Myrah". Apparently, back in the '70s, the Left Banke single "Pedestal b/w Myrah" was impossible to locate by fans of the band. Therefore noone knew what those songs sounded like. TNT, decided to record their own versions of these songs without ever having heard the originals. They didn't even come close to the Left Banke versions, but they were released as a bootleg and at the time fooled a lot of people. TNT's scam was brilliant. The length of each song was exactly the same length as Left Banke's (TNT had a photocopy of the 45 so they knew how long they were supposed to be). The scam was eventually unraveled when someone realized the recordings were in stereo instead of mono. Many people to this day still consider TNT's versions to be superior to the Left Banke's
The album as a whole is best characterized as patchwork (ranging from Brian Wilson-esque songs to standard rock-fare). Definately a great purchase if you like making mixed tapes with a few hidden gems that will wow your friends.
