With an actress like Thelma Ritter how could you go wrong. Why Ritter never won an Oscar is beyond reason. This is an undiscovered gem of a comedy about a marriage broker trying to bring together lonely people. Along comes model Jeanne Crain and Ritter sets her straight regarding men. Very entertaining film directed by George Cuker with some good supporting actors including Zero Mostel, Michael O'Shea, JC Flippen and Frank Fontaine. Don't miss this one. FOX's MOD release looks flawless. Keep up the good work FOX. BTW, Alfred Newman re-used part of the score a few years later for THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH.

Thelma Ritter carries this film as a once two-timed women in the business of fixing up life's losers. Suddenly a rare gem falls in her lap in the form of Jeanne Crain (the model) who is going to get Thelma's services like it or not at no charge. Scott Brady is the lucky stiff (and I mean stiff) who gets set up with Crain. Not everyone is always fully in the know about other folk's motives but it is an entertaining film especially for the interplay of Ritter and Crain. There are a number of fine small supporting performances by the clients of Ritter's services throughout. The only real drawback is Brady who by his iffy acting and frankly at times "smarmy" character in the film leave you asking what Jeanne Crain's character could even see in him. If you like Thelma Ritter it is a must have.

Directed by George Cukor, "The Model and the Marriage Broker" is a hidden gem of a comedy that is being rediscovered. As the model, Jeanne Crain is as lovely as ever as a department store mannequin. As the marriage broker, Thelma Ritter steals the show with more screen time than Jeanne. At least, her name was listed above the title with Crain and leading man Scott Brady!

The supporting cast of characters who hire Ritter to find them mates are a marvel: Zero Mostel, Nancy Kulp, Frank Fontaine, Jay C. Flippen, Helen Ford, Dennie Moore and John Alexander. Plus Michael O'Shea as Ritter's card-playing buddy.

This is a striking black & white print with rich tones on DVD-R from Fox Cinema Archives.
A pleasant surprise in every way!

I really love old black and white movies. They bring back wonderful memories. People solving problems with ingenuity and common sense. The movies themselves don't have the dramatic effect of color, impressive technology the use of offensive language, and inappropriate intimate behavior by its characters. What they do create is that feeling of taking a simple perhaps idealistic story line and bring out how common sense as corny as it may seem still works and that right will always be right.

That being said I really appreciate the acting styles of both Jeanne Crain and Thelma Ritter. They have their own unique style and their portrayal in the Model and the Marriage Broker was absolutely wonderful. I had seen this movie years ago and was thrilled to find it available for purchase. I'm very happy to add this to our movie collection.

George Cukor must have been thrilled with Thelma Ritter's exhausted and hard-working broker. Thank you Fox Archives for finally bringing this little seen gem back to life via DVD.

I've been looking for this title in DVD format for years, having seen it long ago on TV. My only regret is that it is so expensive -- but Thelma Ritter is always worth seeing onscreen..

George Cukor on location in New York City, with a top cast. Thelma Ritter was never better and more appealing, Jeanne Crain beautiful and lost (till she meets Scott Brady, pretty lost himself without her). A story about loneliness that is absolutely hilarious (and touching) with a great script and fluid direction that keeps the actors and the camera moving without any of it seeming self-conscious. For some reason, this film is overlooked; perhaps it's because it took it so long to come out on home video. It's a gem, worth the purchase by any movie fan. Zero Mostel and Frank Fontaine and Michael O'Shea all turn in great cameos. And the music by Cyril Mockridge is the exact same theme that was used a few years later in "The Seven Year Itch."

A great little story with heart. Not exactly your standard romantic comedy... thought-provoking. Has a happy ending and kind of a twist at the end.
