4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sword, especially for the price!, October 26, 2010
This review is from: U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry War Replica Sword (Misc.)
The sword itself is wonderful. Rather heavy, lovely wood-and-wire grip. The blade is set solidly and does not rattle in the hilt like most other swords in this price range tend to do. I could probably whack away with it and not break it, if I were so inclined. The balance is about 4 inches away from the hilt, but that's fine by me since mine is for display and costume purposes only. When oiled (I use Remington gun oil) it shines beautifully.
This is most definitely NOT a toy (although hopefully no one interested in a metal sword would intend it for child or child-like use). The blade comes unsharpened, but the tip is VERY sharp and pointed, and could easily run someone through. Testing it on an old phonebook, (a no-no with blades, I know) I found it punctured through without much pressure applied. The blade is tapered along the one edge, and can be very easily sharpened.

I give this a rating of 4 stars not because of the sword; I'm extremely happy with it. The -1 is for the scabbard- it's not terrible, but it's pretty cheap and the sword keeps getting stuck in it. I found that it was up at the opening that was almost too narrow for the sword to come out, and was able to help the problem with a metal file and oil.

If this is your first sword, keep in mind that this is CARBONIZED steel (as opposed to STAINLESS steel) and therefore WILL rust if not properly cared for. Store in a cool dry place OUT OF THE SCABBARD (moisture can get trapped inside), and keep the metal parts oiled with a non-corrosive, non-vegetable oil (I use RemOil, which is gun oil; although I have some friends who say 100% mineral oil is better).

4.0 out of 5 stars neat saber, January 25, 2011
This review is from: U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry War Replica Sword (Misc.)
So I'm a fencer and this blade feels really heavy. Of course this isn't a fencing blade so it obviously isn't going to be light or to be used in any recreational bouting. It showed up to my home promptly wrapped in plastic. The blade and the sheath were covered in oil(to the protect the carbon steel from oxidizing.) But the sheath was also covered in the oil which I found odd. My blade came with a strange crack going up the forte of the blade. The weight of the blade is also centered on the handle rather than evenly displaced which makes swing it a bit difficult without practice. For the price it's a nice blade, much better than some of the crap I've bought on ebay.

When I ordered this sword I didn't really have high hopes for its quality, but I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. The UPS website said my shipment would be delayed due to an accident at the seller's warehouse, but it arrived on time anyway. As for the sword itself, it is a little unbalanced, but visually striking and I definitely do not regret buying it.

I recently completed my active duty contract with the Army. I bought two sabers for my closest friends who I served with. I was impressed with the quality and definetly the price. I will be sure to get one for myself soon.

Received this as a gift, the blade is a very nice grade of carbon steel, holds a edge well and is fairly nick resistant, It passes through vertebrae with only slight resistance and so far no marring of the cutting edge, the balance forward problem noted by another reviewer allows extra leverage on the swing so the blade doesn't bind in bone. I highly recommend this sword.

I purchased this sword to mount on a plaque as a parting gift for a soldier who is retiring from the military.

Even though I received a wooden handled sword, instead of the black leather handled sword, this is a terrific sword for the price. Yes; there are nicer -- and significantly more expensive -- swords out there. However, for the price, this sword makes a wonderful display when mounted on a nice wooden plaque. Add the bullet hangers that are available elsewhere on Amazon and a brass plaque with some text and the whole project looks gorgeous -- all at a very reasonable price.
