This book is really essential for any serious model railroader who wants to accurately model the many kinds of freight cars out there. There is lots of information about types of cars, how they're used, how they look, etc. A basic book for all model railroaders' libraries.

This book gets a little deep and doesn't cover everything, but it covers MOST things you ever wanted to know about Rolling Stock/Freight Cars. As a novice, you may wish to wait on this one, unless you are in to details. Prototype pictures are plentiful, with a smattering of models. Jeff is an outstanding expert in this area, so you're getting your money's worth.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for any modeler of any level, March 17, 2011

I'm hardly an advanced modeler, but I really enjoyed this book and have found myself returning to it again and again as I purchase, catalog, and improve rolling stock. It's a superb reference, with body types, roof types, door types, truck types, and you name it for all the major classes of rolling stock. The text covers the evolution of railroad cars as well as their functions and is amply illustrated throughout with great photographs.
