The Republic of Tatarstan, the ancient Muslim country located in the heartland of the Russian Federation, has been traveling the same unknown path in the minefield of post-Communist market transition as the rest of the former Soviet Union. Yet under the leadership of its democratically elected President Mintimer Shaimiev, Tatarstan is a model of democratic transition, internationally recognized as the Model of Tatarstan. This book explains the democratic and social market-oriented reforms in Tatarstan as well as the prudent pragmatism of President Shaimiev, whose vision and practice of market reform have helped his country to ease the grip of the present Russian economic and financial crisis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tatarstan - a Model for Russia, March 13, 2000
This review is from: The Model of Tatarstan: Under President Mintimer Shaimiev (Hardcover)
This fascinating book written by Ravil Bukharayev is an excellent example of serious, scholarly approach to the subject of economic and political reform in post-Communist societies. This is a book that ought to be recommended to Vladimir Putin, the leader who is expected to continue the course of reforms in Russia. Tatarstan's example of slow but steady movement toward the market economy and democratic system ought to be emulated by Russia, which over the last 10 years stumbled from one crisis to another on its way to the same goal. President Shaimiyev's leadership in Tatarstan ensured a much more successful and effective transition to what Russia has been trying to achive without much success.
