Book Description

Osprey Modelling August 10, 2005
First entering service in 1941 the legendary 'all-wooden' Mosquito was one of the best twin-engined aircraft of its size to see action in World War II. The addition of radar turned the Mosquito into the RAF's premier night fighter, and it achieved great success in the defence of Britain, with some 600 raiders and 600 V1 rockets falling to its guns between 1942 and 1945. The design's superb performance, and ability to escape interception by enemy fighters also made the Mosquito the ideal choice for the RAF's photographic reconnaissance force. This wide range of roles across multiple theatres and air forces are all reflected in the variety of kits built and colour schemes shown throughout this book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Overall, this is another fine addition to Osprey Publications growing line of Modelling Manuals, and although a specializes manual in itself, I feel that any modeler of any skill level will benefit from it’s words and pictures, as the methods, tips, and techniques discussed will definitely help the hobbyist to make his subjects much more detailed and realistic. Definitely a good read, and very much recommended for your bookshelf." -Mark Smith, AeroScale

About the Author

Roy Sutherland has been a professional model maker for the last 20 years, and his work has been seen in TV commercials and movies such as Star Wars: Episode II and Planet of the Apes. Roy is the creative force behind Cooper Details, a small company that has produced resin detail sets for model aircraft since 1990. Roy lives in Fremont, California, and is employed as a project manager for 21st Century Toys, where he oversees production of (not surprisingly) military aircraft and armour replicas. He lives in Fremont, California.

2.0 out of 5 stars frustrating book, October 26, 2006

I have purchased three books in this series and they all suffer from the same flaw. Not enough specfic detail. Perhaps these books are not intended to be 'how to' books, in which case they make great browsing for a non-builder. However a builder looking for information will find the books hint more than they explain. Two examples are references to custom paint mixes with no mention of the formula or paints used, and reference to modifying the Tamiya kit's tail with no detail about where or what to cut or reshape. Perhaps these details are obvious to some but then would these people be the target audience for these books? In the end I came away greatly impressed with the modelling skills of the author but with very little specific knowledge to help improve my own skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modelling the De Havilland Mosquito, October 10, 2005

An excellent book. The standard of modelling is first-rate, and higher than some other titles I have seen in this series. Photography is very good. A good selection of subjects, detailing and finishing techniques, and minor conversions is covered, based on the superb Tamiya 1/48 and 1/72 kits. Highly recommended. I will definitely buy other aircraft modelling titles by this author.

Roy Sutherland has made a career of excellent aviation research and products for the scale modeler, and this book continues the trend. While the book emphasizes Airfix and Tamiya kits of the Mosquito, the techniques and information are applicable to improving any Mosquito kit or scratchbuilding project. Even if you aren't a Mosquito enthusiast, the techniques and processes featured in Sutherland's work alone are well worth the book's price. I've had experience with Roy's resin detail products, and this book mirrors the scholarship and talent he has demonstrated in his other product lines. Recommended without reservation.
