Book Description

Osprey Modelling June 24, 2004
The IS (Iosef Stalin) heavy tanks were some of the most widely used AFVs produced by the USSR. First entering combat in 1944, the IS-2 went head-to-head with German tanks such as the Panther, Tiger and King Tiger, and post war IS-2s and IS-3s were exported to China, Cuba and North Korea. This book is packed with easy to follow super-detailing and finishing instructions for building the IS-2, IS-3, and IS-3M variants, as well as for the prototype ISU-152, and features kits from manufacturers such as Dragon, Tamiya, and Fujimi. Advanced scratch-building techniques and working with photo-etched and other after-market accessories in 1/35 and 1/76 scales are covered, making this highly accessible book a welcome addition to any modeller's library.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent modeling reference manual, August 11, 2007

I have picked up a few of the different modeling manuals over the years from Osprey. Some are so-so or cover too many odd/offbeat variants of the main subject tank as opposed to the tank it says on the cover! This one, however, I felt hit the mark pretty close. I bought it for it's coverage of the JS-3 and was not disapointed. Well written, concise with good photos. I really enjoyed this one. Would have rather seen more on the 1/35 IS-2 as opposed to two version of the 1/72 scale models, however, I understand that there are 1/72 armour modelers out there. A good overall manual from, much to my surprise, a fellow Montrealer!

4.0 out of 5 stars IS/JS Heavy Tank a thumbs upper, August 19, 2006
This review is from: Modelling the IS Heavy Tank (Osprey Modelling) (Paperback)
Ok, the lead in is 'IS Heavy Tank', the punch line is 'Most are!'. That out of the way, this is the first Modelling Series book by Nicola Cortese. I'd check out any other book he put his name on. Photos are crisp, high contrast, and detailed. He lists the materials and sources he uses. I haven't built a Stalin tank since the old Aurora kit. I think that will change. If you have an interest in building Russian WWII armor check this book out before you start.
