Book Description

July 25, 2004 Osprey Modelling (Book 11)
The P-47 Thunderbolt, affectionately nicknamed the ‘Jug’, was one of the most famous fighter aircraft of World War II. Used as both a high-altitude escort fighter and a low-level fighter-bomber, it quickly gained a reputation for being tough and resilient. Many different air forces operated this plane, and it sported a wide range of camouflage schemes, finishes and markings, including stunning nose art. Modellers have been well served with Thunderbolt kits over the years, right up to the latest highly accurate releases. This book takes a step-by-step approach to modelling a wide variety of P-47 types in 1/48-scale, from ‘Razorbacks’ in USAAF colours to RAF T-bolts in the Far East. It provides expert advice on conversions (including a Bubbletop to a P-47M), adding aftermarket items, detailing, and ways to achieve top quality weathering and finishes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading title, excercise caution., September 25, 2004
This review is from: Modelling the P-47 Thunderbolt (Osprey Modelling) (Paperback)
The book title is misleading. The title should include"....in 1/48 Scale." That is the only scale this Vol. in the Osprey Modeling series addresses. There is no mention of any of the other scale kits on the market. With this said, if you enjoy building one quarter scale "Jugs", you might rate this book higher that I did. The book outlines almost step by step building of all the currently popular 1/48 scale kits. There is little discussion of which kits are the best, but once chosen for the project the flaws of that kit are pointed out for correction. This includes sanding down the raised wing sections of the Academy 47D kit. I don't know about you, but my inclination is to start with a better kit. Yes, there are good model construction instructions to follow and learn from but you can get a lot of these ideas from other how to books.
