Book Description

Consciousness Studies May 5, 1999
Models Of The Self introduces recent developments in a growing field of research the embodiment of the self. Self- consciousness is probably the most fascinating aspect of this problem. The multidisciplinary approach to self-consciousness, from its development in infancy, to its disorders in neurological as well as psychiatric conditions, offers a real challenge to philosophers who are interested in such broad issues as the foundations of agency or the unity of the self. The book is fully edited, which is a rare feature in multi-authored works. The philosophical thread runs through the chapters, even those which deal with psychological or biological questions. Contributors include:

PHILOSOPHICAL CONTROVERSIES: Galen Strawson (keynote paper), Kathy Wilkes, Andrew Brook, Eric Olson and John Pickering.

COGNITIVE AND NEUROSCIENTIFIC MODELS: V.S. Ramachandran & W.Hirstein, Jaak Panksepp, Donald Perlis, Jun Tani and James Blachowicz

DEVELOPMENTAL AND PHENOMENOLOGICAL CONSTRAINTS: George Butterworth, Maria Legerstee, Maxine Sheets-Johnstone, Dan Zahavi & Josef Parnas.

PATHOLOGIES OF THE SELF: Shaun Gallagher & Anthony J. Marcel, Jonathan Cole, Louis A. Sass, Jennifer Radden.

MEDITATION-BASED APPROACHES: Robert Forman, Jeremy Hayward, Steven W. Laycock, Jonathan Shear and Arthur Deikman.

FURTHER METHODOLOGICAL QUESTIONS: Jose Louis Bermudez, Mait Edey, Tamar Szabo Gendler, Mary Midgley.

Editorial Reviews

Review

... a challenging and provocative book. It is not an easy read, but the insights and rewards are great. -- Trends in Cognitive Science

Gallagher and Shear have put together a fast paced yet savvy set of readings on the thorny problem of the self. It is a must read. -- Michael Gazzaniga

MODELS OF THE SELF should be of interest to all thinking human beings, but I suspect that, covering as it does such a wide range of disciplines, most readers will be content to sample the volume in accordance with their particular specialist concerns. For my part, I have found many of the contributions stimulating, and in places illuminating. -- Urgyen Sangharakshita, Times Higher Education Supplement, London, March 17, 2000

The book successfully spans a multidisciplinary mix of fields, from psychology and cognitive science through philosophy to mysticism, and some of these papers achieve a genuinely interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. Especially useful are the papers on topics such as psychiatry and Tibetan Buddhism, which may be overlooked in standard Western philosophy courses, but which illuminate the self by decomposing it. Louis Sass, for example, examines the pathological dissolution of the self in schizophrenia, and Jeremy Hayward takes us through the careful self- dissection of Buddhist meditation. -- Peter Lloyd, TLS, 11/12/99 - Times Literary Supplement

We cannot understand consciousness without tackling the self and this book tackles it head-on. -- Susan Blackmore

First Sentence:
The substantival phrase 'the self' is very unnatural in most speech context in most languages, and some conclude from this that it's an illusion to think that there is such a thing as the self, an illusion that arises from nothing more than an improper use of language. Read the first page
