Book Description

October 15, 2006
Models of Counseling Gifted Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults is a unique resource for practitioners and educators interested in counseling gifted and talented individuals. In this groundbreaking book, contributing authors steeped in the disciplines of both gifted education and counseling share in detail their approaches to counseling clients who are gifted and talented. This book is designed to help interested professionals, as well as those in preparation programs, conduct effective counseling techniques with highly able clients. Models of Counseling provides both novice and experienced helping professionals expert guidance in counseling gifted and talented individuals from a set of international contributors with years of experience counseling this special-needs population. The book contains introductory chapters that discuss the rationale for the book and take a critical historical look at the literature related to giftedness and counseling the gifted and talented. Each chapter devoted to the models includes the author's conception of giftedness and definition of counseling; the roles of the counselor, client, and counselor-client relationship; counseling techniques; and a case illustration.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Finally! This book is a much-needed addition to the contemporary literature on counseling gifted children, adolescents, and young adults. I found it a rare treat, written with the counseling professional or student in mind, and using technical and theoretical language. Intended for counselors who work with gifted students, it is focused on social-emotional and clinical issues rather than the important but more frequently-targeted issues of identification and education. With an emphasis on practice, it works as a professional development tool for counselors to use when working with gifted students and young adults. Chapter authors come from a variety of backgrounds, and include school counselors, community-based counselors, and professors of teacher development and counseling. Although parents will find up-to-date information and some focus on families, this book is not written primarily for a parent audience. --

Debbie Clelland, Roeper Review, June 2007

About the Author

Sal Mendaglio is associate professor in the Division of Teacher Preparation and the Graduate Division of Educational Research, and research associate in the Centre for Gifted Education at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Prior to his current involvement in teacher education, Sal taught counseling psychology in a graduate program for more than 20 years at the same institution. His primary interests are related to counseling gifted individuals of all ages. Current projects include gifted individuals' perceptions of counseling, influence of congregated settings on self-concept of gifted students, and Dabrowski's theory of positive disintegration. Sal is a licensed psychologist with 30 years experience of counseling gifted individuals. He is chair of the Counseling and Guidance Division, National Association for Gifted Children.

Jean Sunde Peterson, Ph.D, is currently the coordinator of school counseling at Purdue University and was a classroom teacher of gifted education teacher in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Berlin, Germany, for many years prior to graduate work in counselor education at the University of Iowa. Her group work related to the social and emotional development of gifted adolescents led to her making non-academic concerns in this population her primary research focus.

She is a licensed mental health counselor and a National Certified Counselor. She has developed and led school counseling programs at two universities, has contributed 80 publications to the school counseling and gifted education literature, and has won awards in teaching, scholarship, and service. Among her seven books are The Essential Guide to Talking with Gifted Teens and the co-edited Models of Counseling Gifted Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults, and Portrait and Model of a School Counselor.
