I almost didn't buy this book because it was so obscure - and expensive. After reading about 30 books on bibliology - from conservative inerrants (Geisler, Harris, Mohler, Grudem, Warfield, etc.) to left wingers (Enns, Ehrman, etc.) and everything in between (Bovell, Smith, NT Wright, Sandy/Walton, James Barr, etc.) and secular scholarship (Carr, Schneidewinde, VanderToorn, etc.) I didnt see the point in reading anything more. Surely I had covered my bases. What was one more book?

I couldn't have been more wrong. I wish I read this book 10 years ago as a young evangelical struggling with how to use and think about the Bible. Goldingay has the remarkable ability to make clever, decisive arguments all in a prose and style that is non-offensive to virtually all sides of the debate. Rarely have seen such thoughtfuless, depth of perception, and balance in Christian bibliology.
I would go on, but I'm tired and have a headache.
Instead, I will simply forbid you from not buying this book if you are at all trying to figure out what the crap the Bible is and how it should be used! Don't wait another day!

This book is a phenomenal piece of literature. It did such a wonderful job of helping me straighten out extraordinarily difficult questions. Coming from a pretty conservative theological background, I had strong views of "inerrancy." This was detrimental to my worldview and faith, because when I began to notice through serious study that the bible does not act the way I was taught it acted, the immediate next logical step was to say Jesus probably is not who they told me he is either. That is such an unnecessary step to take, and John Goldingay helped me with this book more than anything I have ever read (as well as an appendix in his 3 volume old testament theology). If you are wrestling with what role the bible plays in your relationship with God, or if Christianity is a sham because the bible is all full of precritical "wrong" information, this book is neither a waste of time nor money, it is a life changer. Devour it.
