1.0 out of 5 stars A Graduate Education Student's Review
After utilizing this book as the required textbook for the graduate level 'Models of Teaching' course at the University of Memphis, I can honestly say that, throughout my pursuit of a Master's Degree in Education, this has to be one of the worst texts I have ever had to suffer. I found it to be poorly written, badly formatted, and terribly confusing in its organization...

I have been a practicing teacher in the field for 20 years. I am a graduate of a Big 10 University, with a double major and outside field in education. This book is the best resource I have ever seen for the college student wishing to become a teacher, or for the practicing teacher who was stiffed in methods classes. This book explains in detail the way to use the various models of instruction and how to construct them. It is very explicit in giving anyone the information necessary to become a master teacher. I feel extremely fortunate, even at this point in my career, to have had the exposure to this book that I have. It has allowed me to focus the methods I have been using, and given me the confidence to attempt models that I have not used or even heard of. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in becoming an instructor of any kind, as this book will help everyone, K-graduate school.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Graduate Education Student's Review, April 23, 2003

This review is from: Models of Teaching (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
After utilizing this book as the required textbook for the graduate level 'Models of Teaching' course at the University of Memphis, I can honestly say that, throughout my pursuit of a Master's Degree in Education, this has to be one of the worst texts I have ever had to suffer. I found it to be poorly written, badly formatted, and terribly confusing in its organization. Even my instructor -- who holds a doctorate in education and is a highly-regarded professional consultant in the field of adult education -- is still unsure exactly how many so-called 'models' were introduced by this unforgiveably overpriced excuse for a text! Thank heaven my classmates and I could rely on good lectures and excellent group learning activities. Leave this one on the shelf!! Better yet, tell Joyce, Weil and Calhoun to head back to English class and then re-focus their efforts on creating a teaching tool that will serve to help the student rather than frustrate him.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, February 19, 2004
By A Customer
This text is an awesome summary of 'state of the art' teaching models that improve student achievement. The scenarios provide a glimpse into what each model would look like in the classroom. The authors have also provided an extensive rationale and research base for each model. Joyce is definately an author that informed educators should pay attention to.
If you want one of the best sources as an educator looking to improve his/her own teaching practice (and student achievement), this is it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A excellent resource tool!, December 22, 2001
This review is from: Models of Teaching (6th Edition) (Hardcover)
I have read many books on the theory of instruction, but find this book one of the most useful. Balancing theory and practice with actual case studies that help readers to realize the value of the individual models, this text is hardly what some may fear as the standard, dry text that they encounter in a models of instruction course. I highly recommend this well-written text to both pre-service and veteran teachers who want to examine instruction more closely.

Tired of doing the same things in the classroom? This book is not just for the beginning teacher...it should be in every teacher's library. I used this as part of a graduate course and it has inspired me to try new things in my classroom and has taught me how to approach them correctly. This is a wonderful collection of models for all subject areas.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best textbooks I've ever had to read., February 15, 2007
This is a keeper. I'm never selling it back. I'm a graduate student in education, and have taught for many years. Some of the models are a re-introduction for me, and some I have not ever thought about at all. The book is very well-written and well-organized. There are ample citations of supporting research for each of the major teaching models.

Great text.

2.0 out of 5 stars Required text; not an easy read, August 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This text layout is confusing. The scenarios are beneficial. However, the text itself is difficult to follow. This text lacks consistent organization. Unfortunately, it is a required text for my master's program. Otherwise, I would have chosen another text to read regarding this subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Education is a goal never achieved, July 30, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The authors do a great job of providing indebt explanation of each instructional model. As one reads and applies the models, we discover that each one is geared towards teaching students how to learn. Therefore, these are actually models of learning. The key thoughts in the book are as follows: 1)Education is a goal never achieved because knowledge is transitional; 2) There is no "one best" model - it would be a mistake to focus on one model (no matter how effective the model is) because there are multiple models to use in given situations in the classroom geared specifically to what you want the learners to accomplish in the learning process; 3)Effective teachers enhance the born abilities of learners to inquire, classify, and problem solve - thus creating effective learners who can apply multiple models of learning during the learning process; 4) The mistake we make is to focus entirely on the end of the learning process - the product - when we should be excited about what the students are doing - the process - to achieve success; 5) Inquiry should be an ongoing process during learning;therefore, the teacher must reach into his repertoir of models to choose the best fit to ensure that he can measure how well the students are learning; 6) Learning only occurs when there is a level of discomfort placed upon the learner by the teacher; 7)Teachers create learning environments and the learner responds to the stimuli in the environment; 8) Effective teachers adapt the learning environment to the learners - not make the learner adapt to the learning environment; 9) Education is the vehicle which can eliminate racial, gender, and socioeconomic inequalities; 10) The goal of an entire curriculum should be to increase the learners ability to build upon their repertoir of learning and to master complex concepts.

2.0 out of 5 stars okay, September 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book was shipped on time. However, I bought this book new and the back hardcover was scratched poorly and the binding on this book is awful. The pages are falling apart. I was better off buying a used book.
