Book Description

July 1, 2005
Writing is best taught through models. Showing students how other authors apply the writing-craft skills is a vital part of writing instruction. This innovative resource matches 24 fundamental writing-craft Target Skills to a wide selection of fiction and non-fiction books, providing a solid starting set of strong models for writing-craft instruction. Both trade books and resources available only from educational publishers are included. Most models are picture books, which are particularly engaging for young readers. A Target Skill cross-index helps teachers reference how to re-use many of the models to teach multiple craft skills.

Models for Teaching Writing-Craft Target Skills:

--Helps teachers fully exploit the natural connection between writing and content-area reading.

--Increases the power of writing-workshop modeled lessons.

--Separates for easier instruction the critical general writing-craft skills from genre-linked skills.

--Saves teachers time and energy by organizing all the models they need to teach writing craft.

5.0 out of 5 stars Models for Teaching Writing-Craft Target Skills, December 21, 2006
This review is from: Models for Teaching Writing-Craft Target Skills (Paperback)
This is a must have book for every writing teacher and school library. This book provides teachers with resource lists of trade books and educational books which are excellent models of specific writing crafts and writing genres. It is very user friendly.

As a third grade teacher, this book has been very useful. It saves me a lot of time locating models for a specific craft. I found that a lot of the titles listed in this resource book were titles I already had in my personal library. I didn't need to buy a lot of new books but instead Models for Teaching Writing-Craft helped me use my personal library collection more effectively.

4.0 out of 5 stars Making Life Easier for Teachers..., December 14, 2006
This review is from: Models for Teaching Writing-Craft Target Skills (Paperback)
Models for Teaching Writing-Craft Target Skills is a great resource tool for teachers interested in writing instruction. In order to teach specific writing skills, teachers need to read an example of the writing skill from a published author's work. The problem is that teachers are already strapped for time, and perusing many books searching for a specific skill is a cumbersome task. This book identifies specific writing skills and provides examples of published books modeling that skill. For example, if you want to teach a writing lesson on strong verbs, you can go to the Models book and find a list of books using strong verbs. This book is a must-have for schools teaching writing through specific target skills. It even has a record-keeping system included for recording the locations of these books for the next time they're needed. It is a true time-saving tool for teachers.
