I use this textbook in my introductory level Expository Writing class. Overall, it's great. There are a few essays that are--in my opinion--a little too "dry" in terms of their content, but the discussion questions/suggested writing assignments do help students better understand the techniques and concepts each piece contains. I especially like the addition of a "thematically" organized Table of Contents; in other words, the book contains the usual ToC, but it has another that lists the essays by topic (e.g., Pop Culture, Moral Values, etc.).

In fact, I only have one quibble: why isn't there a Kindle version!?

When the head of the department announces that a new textbook will be used for the freshman writing course, I normally gnash my teeth, break out in hives and make a great moaning. "Oh, no, I was just getting used to teaching from the other one," I groan. Sometimes my despair is justified because the new book just doesn't work for me. Most of the time my grief is unwarranted because the new book is pretty much the same as the old. It's a pleasant shock when the new textbook is actually an improvement. Professors Eschholz and Rosa's "Models for Writers: Short Essays for Composition", in terms of content, style and practicality, has won me and my students over.

The first thing that struck me was the size of the book. In spite of its 700+ pages, it is quite portable, unlike some other writers' guides that are about the size of a car battery and just as heavy. My students appreciated this, as well. Of course, it's the insides--the guts--that count. I like the arrangement of topics and most of the samples. (While all of us who teach English composition have our own fantasy textbook in our heads, in which we compile what we consider to be the best essays, we have to make do with what we are offered. *Sigh*) I will agree with one reviewer, however, that there are too many excerpts and not enough full-length essays. As far as the short shrift that is paid to MLA style, I can live with that since it is not part of our curriculum. In terms of what my students do need, I found the section on Process Analysis to be especially helpful.

And speaking of students, I would be lying through my formerly gnashed teeth to say that they have embraced this textbook. What I can say is that they recognize that the writing neither talks down to them nor is too obtuse to follow. More than a few of them said that (heart be still) they went ahead and read other sections on their own and "really liked" them. This is high praise, indeed.

I really like this book. Not only are the chapters short and to the point. The examples given with each chapter are very helpful to understand what the chapter was talking about.

This is an excellent resource of models for teachers of Language and writing, and for all writers. I have used this text with my students since Dec 1991 and was just thrilled to see the current avatar of the text and placed my order straight away. I don't regret buying this new edition - it's even better, even more thorough than the copy I bought in 1991. This is a must for all teachers, writing students and writers with a passion for writing.

This text was chosen by someone else, so I was a little anxious about it before it arrived. I'm pleased to say that the tone, structure, content and price of this text make it an excellent choice for teaching composition to incoming college freshmen.

Requires Kindle for PC. Not usable on Kindle or other mobile devices. Recommend picking up the hard copy as this is not usable at all.
