Directions for changing / choosing your watch band or buckle,
By
This review is from: Modena Watch black spring bar tool for changing watch band/buckles (Misc.)
Before you purchase a new watch band, you will need to know what size watch band you need.
To find out what size what band you need, just measure your current watch band / strap at the end that meets the watch. Most men's watch bands range from 18mm - 22mm (larger men's watches are also now using 24mm or 26mm) and come in metal, leather, rubber, silicone, lizard, ostrich, alligator, suede, shark, stingray, and many other materials. Most women' watch bands range from 14mm - 18mm (larger women's watches are now using up to 24mm bands) and come in metal, leather, rubber, silicone, lizard, ostrich, alligator, suede, shark, stingray, and many other materials. Most watch bands are "straight" at the end. If your watch band is "straight" at the end (no cutouts, etc.), then you will be able to easily find watch bands on ebay by simply typing in the size watch band you need (example - "18mm watch band" if your watch uses 18mm watch bands, etc). If your watch is not "straight" at the end, then you'll need to search using the name/make/model of your watch to find the correct band (example - "....(brand).....(model)....(size)..., watch band"). If you have any questions re: what watch band you need, just email the seller of the watch band BEFORE bidding w/ any questions and most sellers are more then happy to help you purchase the right size/band. You might also want to pick up a spring bar tool on ebay when purchasing your new watch band / strap. These inexpensive tools will help you easily switch out your band. Once you have your band and are ready to switch out your band, simply follow these easy directions: -- All you have to do is get a spring bar tool (or a very small flat head screwdriver or a knife - be careful, please) and push the pins in that hold the band/buckle onto the watch. Just insert spring bar tool/screwdriver/knife between side of band and case/buckle and push in and down. The band should "pop off" the watch and then just switch out the pins into the new band/buckle (and then place the band/buckle on your watch) and you'll be able to change your band/buckle easily and quickly. -- These directions will work for 95% of all watches. If you have a watch that uses screws or screw pins to hold your watch band on (usually more expensive watches), you will need a small screwdriver and will "unscrew" the pin instead of "popping" it off. If you do have a watch w/ screw pins, I would suggest that you check w/ a jewler before switching out your band (just to be safe). Compact tool, especially useful for removing the Rolex bracelets with cases having side holes. Finish is average. The tips cannot be changed. Price is reasonable

The tool is too fat to work with the lug holes on my 1987 Ladies Rolex Oyster Perpetual. Not Modena's fault, but I read a review here that recommended it for Rolex. Ironically after failing with this tool, I saw a YouTube video that uses a paper clip. And that works great!

The tool's handle is slip fit over the bar, and when I applied the least bit of pressure to get the prong to the watch pins the handle kept slipping and sliding toward the end so I couldn't gain any purchase or leverage whatsoever. And the end that was supposed to help with band pins was too large for my clasp. Ha! Waste of dough.

This works perfectly for changing my watch bands occasionally. You can use the other end for pushing out link pins. the holder is not firmly attached to the metal part. Worth using if you do a little watch maintenance sometimes.

This tool may work with some watches however the pin side was too large to fit the diameter of the pins on my watch.

So the watchband on my favorite watch broke. I bought a new one, and worked for a half hour trying to get the old band off. In the end, I had to cut it off (thankfully it was leather), and then it still took me 20 minutes to get the pins off the watch and into the new band. When I finally got the whole thing reassembled I discovered to my horror that I had reversed the band, which puts the end tab facing you, which is just annoying. What to do? I couldn't cut off a brand new band. I searched Amazon and found this inexpensive tool, and since I have Amazon Prime, it was free shipping, too. When it arrived, I went to work on my watchband. I was done in two minutes, no kidding. Nothing like having the right tool for the job.

I bought this spring bar tool after breaking my previous tool. The forked end of this springbar tool is not small enough to depress the spring bars on my watches with metal bands. For watches with leather, rubber, or fabric straps, this should do the job.

It's a shame... I was looking forward to putting this little tool to work. From the description and size given it would seem to be a perfect tool for band removal. Not so, at least in my case. The forked end that is the business end of the tool seems to be too thick to reach into tight places with metal bands. It will probably work with leather but that wasn't my particular need. Also, as other reviewers have stated, the black handle is not glued to the metal shaft and slides when putting ANY amount of pressure on the handle. POOR design. This, IMO, should be stationary, fixed not "floating". I would recommend looking elsewhere for a more effective product and pay the extra $ if needed. Lesson learned.
