A good, basic guidebook, especially for the novice., January 27, 1997

This review is from: The Modern Backpacker's Handbook (Paperback)
Randall writes from a wealth of experience in the outdoors and has even led parties up Mount McKinley.
The book covers all the basics and is an excellent introduction to the sport of backpacking. I especially recommend it for the novice contemplating a backcountry hike. With proper preparation, backpacking and camping can be an enjoyable and even spiritual experience. Lack of preparation can end in death due to exposure or a costly search and rescue. Reading this book will help make your first wilderness experiences a success.
