4.0 out of 5 stars Good Reference
I'm a 4th year medical student, and found this book extremely helpful during my Blood Bank rotation. It is really good at explaining the concepts behind the technical procedures.

4.0 out of 5 stars A companion to day-by-day situations in blood banking., September 9, 1997

In this work, the author was complete when joining basic aspects in blood banking to routine methods and even advanced concepts. A very usefull textbook for students, residents or blood bankers, where current subjects as quality control and ethical aspects are aproached with precision and clearness

5.0 out of 5 stars Assistant Professor at Auburn University and SBB from the NIH, June 13, 2006
This review is from: Modern Blood Banking & Transfusion Practices (Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practice) (Hardcover)
The Harmening books which span more than twenty years in the making are without question the best source of transfusion medicine practices on the market today. Content areas include genetics, molecular biology, blood groups, antibody identification, transfusion transmitted diseases, hemolytic disease of the newborn, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, etc... Contributors are experts in their field providing a wealth of knowledge to the blood banking student and transfusion medicine fellow. Every blood bank should buy this book!!

For beginning blood bankers this is quite a valuable textbook. The topics covered are comprehensive in knowledge and fairly well organized. Like all textbooks that are written by multiple authors, some chapters are more difficult to follow than others, but I believe Mrs. Harmening did a commendable job editing the book. Overall, a very good book for students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!!, July 1, 1999
By A Customer
Comprehensive, precise covering from basics to applications, and from both theoretical and modern technical view point. Frequest figures and tables help me understand each topic a lot. I also like review questions and case studies at the end of each chapter. This book is a book I always reach for my immunohaematology studies at university.

I am an MT with 10 years experience in a level I trauma center. I took 13 years off to raise my daughters. I bought this book to help review for my reentry into the laboratory. I have only gotten to chapter three so far, and am finding it hard to stay interested. I am finding the writing to be choppy, and the information isn't always pertinent to the current topic. While the author defines relatively common terms, the more obscure terms are left unexplained or are left to charts. The most outstanding feature causing me to write the review is the incessant evolutionary theory references. On the last 4 pages I have read, there were seven random sentences about this theory. It is annoying and very distracting. Whether you adhere to this theory or not, the references do not seem to have anything to do with the topic, but seem to be an attempt at indoctrination. This won't bother many people, but if I had been apprised of this characteristic, I would have chosen another text. All in all, I believe there must be a more coherent text out there, with better "flow" of information. If used in a class with a good instructor who can fill in the blanks and explain the disjointed information, the book will be adequate. I am just glad I've spent the last decade polishing my biology, physics, and chemistry so that I am able to know what is going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Blood Bank Book, July 4, 2010

This is a very good blood bank book. In college we just used the technical manual for blood bank and it was very confusing, but in my clinical internship we used this book (Harmening) and it was fantastic. It has everything you would ever want to know or need to know about blood bank in it, and it is presented in a way that is very clear and easy to understand.

I bought this for my sister who is going to school and paid MUCH less than the price of the college bookstore. Got the same item for cheaper, what can beat that?
