4.0 out of 5 stars excellent reference book, May 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Bridge Conventions (Paperback)
Most useful to the intermediate or advanced bridge player, this books offers more conventions than you ever thought existed. An excellent glossery allows quick review of forgotten techniques and points to the correct page for an expansion. Conventions range from the very simple (convenient minors) to the much more complicated (lebensohl) with very thorough explanations. Overall, a very handy reference book, especially when wanting to explore new conventions or playing with a new partner with a different bidding system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great way to get started with duplicate conventions, September 4, 2000
This review is from: Modern Bridge Conventions (Paperback)
This is the first book to buy when considering adding conventions to your duplicate play. The index tells you each convention's application and the detailed description tells you the level of play usually expected when using the convention. What's more, you'll learn not just the first bidder's convention rules, but the responder's as well. . .and sometimes the bidder's rebid and the responder's rebid. Plus how to handle interference.

I found that not every convention is up to modern snuff (for instance, most modern players will bid Michaels even with a middling hand). But each of the conventions described needs to be adapted to your level of play and partner's agreement anyway.

Many of us at the Columbus Bridge Center who have been playing duplicate for just a year or so are using Modern Bridge Conventions as our entree into the world of expert bridge.

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this book!, December 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Bridge Conventions (Paperback)
this is a wonderful book, with plenty of examples to show possibilities for response bids. you'll find that the conventions you play with and think you know have many more useful twists to them. very good for fine-tuning or designing your partnership conventions.
