5.0 out of 5 stars Summary of practical uses
Modern Carpentary is like having a master carpenter with you at all times. It explains how to go from the site plan to the completed structure in easy to understand language. I have remodeled several houses, built a garage, deck, and addition to my house, all with professional quality and a built-to-last look. The section on roof framing is the best. The book...

As a student in carpentry class, I find this book simple, helpful and detailed. But, our class has found ourselves going to other book sources to answer specific carpentry questions. Whether the information on what we want to know is too vague or just non-existent this book leaves out some particulars. Overall, this is a good foundational reference as a supplement to...

The book simplifies the process into a few easy steps, even for the most complex hip roof. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys carpentary or wants to save money by doing the project yourself. 5.0 out of 5 stars My "Bible" for nearly 30 years, June 12, 2000
By
My dad bought a 1969 copy of Modern Carpentry and we always had it on hand while building my parents house in '72. Since then I've never been without a copy of MC, always buying the latest edition and passing on the earlier ones to friends.

The format is very easy to understand and is laid out in conventional building order. Information on building practices no longer in common use (balloon framing, lath & plaster, etc.) are helpful to the remodeler. It would also be very helpful to a non-builder contracting the construction.

In general, if the information you are looking for is not in the book then you probably shouldn't be doing it yourself. This is not to say that MC is the be-all and end-all of carpentry books but it's the only one I keep in my truck at all times. I have other books that cover tips & tricks, specific techniques (eg. timber framing), and other oddball problems but this is the only one I'll never be without.

5.0 out of 5 stars Center of the world in carpentry, December 9, 2000

This is the best carpentry and overall construction book I've ever read. This should be at the center of all of your construction books. I do construction in the Navy and we have some great books to learn from but this gives book gives you more info on standard construction practices, load sizes for lumber and such detailed information with pictures that can't be beat. I've owned an older edition and that helped me out alot, but this book is truly modern and up to date with construction practices going on right now. This is a must have and you won't go wrong.

This book is a great resource for anyone planning to perform construction work around their house or neighborhood. Lots of useful information on all aspects of building construction as well as being packed with time saving steps to accomplish various tasks. Well worth the money spent. You will continue to use it for years.

As a student in carpentry class, I find this book simple, helpful and detailed. But, our class has found ourselves going to other book sources to answer specific carpentry questions. Needed information on particular subjects is either too vague or non-existent, as this book leaves out some details. Overall, this is a good foundational reference as a supplement to other sources.

We acted as the contractor on both of our homes and this was the one book I referred to over and over. I highly recommend it for anyone building and wanting to get their hands dirty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understandable and Useful, August 2, 2010

This review is from: Modern Carpentry (Hardcover)
I recently got the task of designing a decently sized structure. Although I had done carpentry projects for many years, I soon learned there were a lot of practical things about building design I didn't know. This book is the very best I found at our local library to answer the questions I had. I liked it so much I had to order one for my own library. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars maybe 3 1/2 stars, February 8, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I am a builder / carpenter that collects carpentry books for ideas and for the purpose of tryinng to stay current with new techniques. I purchased this book used from an Amazon reseller, and upon receiving it am dissapointed. The book is very out of date and due to its age, is not comparable to newer books in terms of illustrations. I have several books that are significantly better for carpentry / framing. I would not recommend this book.

Someone bought this particular edition years ago when I first entered the building industry. It was an invaluable tool for me then but unfortunately I lost it when my home burned down and I decided to re-purchase it and add it to my personal library because it has proven to be such a helpful tool.
