4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR CHEMISTRY STARTERS
Those of you who cannot understand chemistry either because the teacher does not know how to teach or you really do not want to listen...THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. The book is a nice manual for those who cannot comprehend chemistry. It will be like your virtual teacher in print. My only complain about this book is that it is too long. The book is a nice manual for those who cannot comprehend chemistry. It will be like your virtual teacher in print. My only complain about this book is that it is too long. But at least it is comprehensive. And what I like most in this book is it is divided into many sections which made it easier to digest.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, March 12, 2007

I thought that this was a great book. I used it for honors chemistry in high school and used the book more than the teacher did because I thought that the book gave some really good examples and lessons, which were completely worked through. This is a great book for people just starting to take chemistry. But beware, a few little topics are passed up, like calculating physical changes.

1.0 out of 5 stars What an awful book to introduce High School Students to the Subject, December 10, 2008
This review is from: Modern Chemistry (Hardcover)
I cannot in my wildest dreams imagine why they are presenting the subject matter in this order. The first 3 chapters are the typical introduction to Chemistry. Then Chapter 4 jumps into Avogadro's number and expects them to calculate moles and ratios of reactants without even introducing the concept of a chemical formula or a chemical equation. The first time they go over chemical formulas is Chapter 7, which by the way is the title of the chapter. However, Chapter 4 begins by explaining the atom in terms of energy levels, magnetic quantum numbers, and progress to periodic law builing on these concepts. Mind you they have yet to introduce the concept of a chemical formula for 2 chapters, but jump into polar covalent bonds and the periodicity of the periodic table including valence electrons, electronegativity, and atomic radii. This book does not allow you to easily switch the order you teach the chapters in due to the building on prior concepts, particularly orbital shapes and electron configurations. I will say the support materials are great if you actually want to teach chemistry the way the book does. This book makes students frustrated, and scares them away from what could be one of the best science classes they could take. I would not in any way recommend this book.

I used this book for my Honors Chem. Class in Highschool, and it is a great book! Good examples, very informational, quick to the point, and shows how to do the math with clear examples.

I would recommend this book to anyone. I got an A in the class! With this book and a good teacher (or just the book) I am sure you will do just fine in your class!
