master work, June 22, 2008
This review is from: The Modern Chess Instructor, Part I and Part II (Classic Chess) (Hardcover)
The Edition Olms facsimile is the most recent edition, published in Switzerland, and includes Part 2, which was originally published only as a booklet and is lacking from any other edition of this work.
Written 1889 through 1895 by one of the top grand masters of that era, the book starts with an introduction explaining the game and the value of the various pieces. The importance of chess as a method of mental education as well as the new school and its tendencies is pointed out. The book presents analyses of six openings: Ruy Lopez, Three- and Four-Knights Opening, Scotch Gambit, Two-Knights Defence, Russian and Philidor Defense, with remarks and explantions to games played by renowned masters. The games are collected by a specific system, to which the author adds many contemporary innovations. The first part concludes with all 17 games played in the match Steinitz - Tschigorin, Havana 1889.
This edition also includes Part 2 (all that has been published), which is one of the rarest items collectors have sought after. That contains analyses of Ponziani's and Giuoco Piano Openings, with illustrative games and notes.
A classic of chess startegy and instruction.
