Book Description

March 30, 2007
Good planning is central to good chess. A plan gives meaning to manoeuvres and tactical devices, forming a coherent whole that brings us closer to our goals. The modern understanding of chess planning has evolved considerably since the days of the "grand plan", whereby a player might even try to map out the whole course of the game. Nowadays, top-class players appreciate that the opponent's ideas also deserve respect, and our own plans must take them into account too. Modern grandmasters plan with great purpose but also flexibly, ready to adjust or even change direction completely when the situation demands it.

Grivas provides 75 superb practical examples where it is important to make the right plan. Once the critical position is reached, he guides you through the options and challenges you to find the right path. Detailed solutions are provided, with a full discussion of the pros and cons of the various options.

3.0 out of 5 stars Title is Somewhat Misleading, June 18, 2007

I'd have to say I was disappointed with this book. The author presents 75 positions and the reader is asked to decide, given three alternatives, the correct plan. There is minimal information about how to form a plan. The plan is determined by the reader. The author follows the Bellin (Test Your Positional Chess) format. Most of the games are the author's. While the book may help your pattern recognition, it won't do much for your planning ability. Bellins book would be my preference.

Grivas provides critical positions many from his own games. He then provides three possible plans. I found it to be a really good training excercise to go through the positions and the solutions. This is a very well done book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't rate compared to Bellin/Ponzetto, February 1, 2010

The first test position in this book is really just a pick-the-best-move question, and the solution contains annotations for the entire 104 (!) move game. There is nothing here about how to pick a plan. In fact, most of the tests are like this. It really amounts to a puzzle book with long answers that do not even relate much to the puzzle. The solution to one test is basically, "you need theoretical knowledge of the Grivas Sicilian, which you can get in my other book about that opening, to answer this one correctly." NOT helpful! The Bellin and Ponzetto book, Test Your Positional Play, remains the classic of this genre.
