Book Description

1956
This book goes right to the heart of a crucial problem - the temptation to let personal religious loyalty be diverted from the one true God to one of today's "secret gods" - a modern form of idolatry. The author deals with some such unacknowledged gods of today's culture in America: loyalty to science, to democracy, or even to one's own nation. He discusses rivals to Christian faith that are more insidious, however, because they are within the Church itself. One trend in today's "return to religion," is the attempt to channel through our thinking the power of God for our own selfish use. Another temptation lies in using the Bible as a kind of formula for power, a practice which Dr. Loew condemns as "utterly blasphemous." But the most subtle and pervasive danger of idolatry is in the influences of our age that encourage us to believe that Christianity is mostly a matter of self-improvement. "Much of our Protestant religion is built on a blasphemous conception of God as an indulgent Father who merely asks us to give a little time and effort to 'the Christian way of life' and who winks at our halfhearted loyalty. This god is an idol." The author's vigorous, clearly worded view of today's problem of confused loyalty to God is one to which all church people will respond. Its insight puts into meaningful expression a situation of which many lay people have been aware, but which is not always recognized for what it is, and is seldom dealt with in such direct, forthright terms.
