5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Weller - Genius, artist, icon...legend
For those who haven't heard much of Paul Weller's music since going solo, this greatest hits complilation is a wonderful place to start - a place to begin to realize just how talented and amazing Weller is (even after making music for more than 20 years!). 2.0 out of 5 stars Bottom of the Weller...
Paul Weller's new "Modern Classics" is a misnomer. The music is hardly modern, nor the music classic. In fact, much of the music seems intended to disappoint. Weller's leap into solo hasn't shined with the aura of his earlier Jam and Style Council days. It seems Weller unbound is not as pleasing as he is with counterparts. Weller's "Modern...

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Weller - Genius, artist, icon...legend, December 14, 1999
This review is from: Modern Classics: The Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
For those who haven't heard much of Paul Weller's music since going solo, this greatest hits complilation is a wonderful place to start - a place to begin to realize just how talented and amazing Weller is (even after making music for more than 20 years!). Quite simply, Weller has managed to create a consistent array of solid, classic songs which don't follow trends, but rather instantly become songs one can listen to over and over again...The one new track (BRAND NEW DAY) makes it clear that he has talent to burn after all these years and that his solo career is a victory in its own right. His fans, like me, truly believe he is the most prolific, talented musical genius in rock history. When you think how many great songs he has produced in this 23 year career...without really selling out we all can call him the ModFather. Buy it, then you'll run to buy the rest...This cd has most of his basic, but you should also check out his first cd (PAUL WELLER) and of course the warmth, woodsy WILD WOOD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!, June 10, 2001

I got into Paul Weller by listening to Oasis. I noticed that he played lead guitar in 'Champagne Supernova' and I also heard Noel Gallagher talking about Paul Weller, so I decided to buy this cd and see how it was. The first time I listened to the cd I loved it. It doesn't sound like Oasis, but it is very good. Some of my favorites on the cd are: Out Of The Sinking, Sunflower, You Do Something To Me, Brand New Start, Broken Stones, and the mellow Wild Wood. Now I want to go out and buy the rest of his cds! It's a shame Paul Weller isn't big here in the States. Music like this deserves to be recognized all around the world! I definitely recommend this wonderful masterpiece!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best of the best, May 2, 1999
By A Customer

paul weller solo albums are the best, it is very hard to explain, but the man is smooth. i was a big jam fan, and a semi style council fan, but his solo outings are just unbeleiveable. every track is a winner. if you purchase this cd, you should get the import version, that contains a 2nd cd called live clasics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Setting Son's finest, September 19, 2002

After a shamefully long hiatus I have rediscovered the splendour of this album which has been criminally neglected. In all of his guises with the Jam, Style Council and on his tod, Woking's finest Setting Son has cemented himself in the pantheon of great British singer/songsmiths of his or any other generation. If you haven't got this CD by now then you must have had taste-bypass surgery. If Wild Wood, You Do Something To Me and...well, every other track doesn't raise the hairs on the back of your neck and float your boat, I suggest checking for a pulse. Buy it. Yesterday.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classics they are!, January 18, 2000
This review is from: Modern Classics: The Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I only really got into Paul Weller again recently, and I would say this album sums up the best of his stuff. If you have heard one or two of his songs and liked them, but are not sure which album to buy - This is the one! Songs like 'Changing Man' and 'Brushed' really stand out as epics for me, but the whole album is packed with quality stuff, you really feel like you have got your moneys worth with this man.

4.0 out of 5 stars A means to an end, February 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Classics: The Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The only reason Weller agreed to this album was as a final get out of his contract with GO! Discs. It's not the finest example of his work (see 'As you lean into the light' on 'Heavy Soul') but there are admittedly some classic tunes. Try not jumping around to 'Changingman' or crying into your beer with 'You do something to me'. There is, however, some fairly lightweight material on this album which are by no means his best and not a clear indication of his work. This should have been called 'The Singles Collection' cos that's what it is.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Retrospective of Solo Weller, July 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Classics: The Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This is a comprehensive and reasonably adequate overview of solo Weller. But at a running time of 55.50, the package could have been bolstered by some of his B-sides, killers like 'Everything Has a Price to Pay' and 'A Year Late'. The inclusion of lyrics won't harm anyone either. And is that a different mix of 'Out of the Sinking' that I'm hearing?

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy for all music lovers, December 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Classics: The Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
After seven years into his solo career (the third of his professional life!), Paul releases this "Best Of" collection. It is a must have for all music lovers, as there are very few performers around that can match the sheer intensity and passion that Paul puts in his work. His music truly is a modern classic and his soul shines through each of the 16 tracks (originally the A-sides of his UK- released singles). If you don't know Paul and his music this will serve as an introduction to his other records; if you already are a fan, you don't need any words of advice. Buy and enjoy for a very long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sampling of Weller's offerings, January 23, 2009

Paul Weller is for the most part unknown in America, which of course is a shame. I have been fortunate enough to have a British friend who introduced me to a wide variety of British artists I would have otherwise missed - Weller included.

I think this CD is a great starter for anyone curious about Weller's music - it has a good variety of songs from loud rockers to soulful ballads.

I especially recommend this if you are a fan of blue-eyed soul - Weller is at the top of his game belting out soul.
