Good basics,
By Book Lover (Arizona) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Modern Classics: Knit Over Twenty Timeless Designs (Paperback)
If you own a large library of knitting patterns, then you may not find a lot of new things here. However, if you're looking for nice basics (I am, so I can modify them by adding different stitches, cables, edges, etc.), then you should really enjoy this collection. I agree with the first reviewer who said that the directions are clear and the patterns are both modern and timeless. The photographs and the book are very attractive.
The patterns are divided up into three weights: 5.5 stitches to the inch, 5 stitches, and 4.5. Perhaps the majority fall into the DK weight (5.5 stitches). They include some nice fitted pullovers and cardigans. Again, nothing shockingly new but really nice basics in clean shapes with some subtle details. Definitely recommended for the advanced beginner or intermediate knitter. I am looking forward to knitting many of these designs.

The directions - clear as a bell. The twenty styles -timeless, modern, classic. But please: many, many women come in sizes other than bust 32 to bust 42. If only the range were 28 to 54, this book would be very close to perfection.

Errors,
By Mac Patter "Knitting in Vermont" (Green Mountains) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Modern Classics: Knit Over Twenty Timeless Designs (Paperback)
As stated in the other reviews, nice pictures and timeless wardrobe building patterns. A word of caution however, I am an experienced knitter and I have found typographic errors. Although it's not impossible to figure out what it is supposed to be it can cause issues and if you're not careful you will be pulling your work out. It might have been hard to check these patterns because of all the variations on one pattern: short sleeve scoop neck, long sleeve turtle neck, 3/4 sleeve V neck, etc. Still a good book with quality illustrations, just question the logic as you go along.

When I buy a knitting book there are 3 things I look for:
1) Are there any patterns in this book I would like to knit? 2) Are the instructions clear? 3) Can I use the book as a resource? The answer to these questions is a resounding 'Yes'. There are patterns for advanced beginners to more experienced knitters. There are at least three patterns I would like to try. I have purchased yarn for two. (Oh, how my stash is growing to take on a life of its own). I like the way each pattern is laid out and that they all have diagrams of how they are pieced together. Most of the patterns are fitted or loosely fitted sleeves which I prefer. Droopy sleeves are not my thing. My only criticism is that I wish the patterns included larger sizes. Some are only 43-44" around the chest when finished. I often wear layers and like my sweaters loose (big actually) and prefer to knit sweaters that end up with a 46" chest finish. If it weren't for the lack of larger sizes I would have rated this book a '5'.

Wonderful classics,

I bought this because I no longer knit intricate or Arran knits. Been knitting for over 50 years and now prefer the simple classic lines.
This book is wonderful for my needs. One of the nicest jackets I have ever done with the scallop edge. Many compliments and fits like a glove. Very smart. I highly recommend this book to have in your library as one day you may decide -like me - I want to knit something without much thought and can confidently sit in front of the TV and just knit. This book has it all, class, simplicity and great results.

I found this book at the library and immediately set out to find a copy of my own. Classic (without being frumpy) styles that you will wear over and over. I don't like to knit trendy sweaters, because I want to be able to wear my handknits forever. Timeless designs. Good pictures. Highly recommend.
